Bug Description

Ubuntu: Jaunty 9.04 updated today (Feb 11, 2009)

I noticed a light bulb on the toolbar. Clicking on it, it said the following:

"""
Refresh Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) configuration presets

New Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) configuration presets have been added. Please execute the asoundconf(1) set-default-card macro in a Terminal now to refresh your user's configuration presets. You may accomplish this task by executing the following command in a Terminal: asoundconf set-default-card
"""

Following the directions, I did this:

bryce@chideok:~/src/xserver-xorg-video-ati$ asoundconf set-default-card
You have omitted a necessary parameter. Please see the output from `asoundconf list`, and use one of those sound card(s) as the parameter.

bryce@chideok:~/src/xserver-xorg-video-ati$ asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:
Intel

bryce@chideok:~/src/xserver-xorg-video-ati$ asoundconf set-default-card Intel

I'm not sure why I had to run this at all, but if I do, then it should give correct directions (the last line there).

Added the correct package (at least for asoundconf). Not quite sure what is throwing the notification.

Here's my dpkg.log if it helps in identifying what threw the notification.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the information requested from the "Reporting Sound Bugs" section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems as separate attachments.

It would be especially helpful to know what version of the alsa-lib you upgraded to right before the error occurred.

Thanks

Knowing sound hardware info is not needed for this bug, and since we use PulseAudio, this notification is probably not needed. Will remove it after alpha.

I received the same warning today in KDE, exactly as the original poster noted.

As with the original poster, I found the directions unclear, and had to use the asoundconf list command, which was not in the warning, to find out the name of the sound card, and then re-run the command with that name appended to the end of the command.

If this is going to be displayed, can the directions be clarified so that we don't have to read the manual and try to interpret what was meant by the error?

I'm also unclear as to why this was necessary. That might be useful for people who are being asked to run through this set of instructions.

I woke up to the same notification today. I installed Kubuntu 9.04 alpha6 fresh and have over the last couple days. So I had not done any special sound installations at all, just the standard updates.

At least the commands worked without sudo :-)

I did everything mention above -- still no sound. I began messing with the sound settings only because I wasn't able to use Skype. Everything worked fine in Ubuntu 8.04. When I did the upgrade to 8.10 I lost my sound-capture. When I tried to fix the problem, I've lost all sound.

Here's what the little lightbulb indicates:

My soundcard is listed as SI7012. I followed directions, without any change to my problem.

I followed this stupid command and now my sound doesn't work anymore. It took me ages to get everything right and now the system is sending me messages telling me things that break it all over again. Not amused.

This is a non-issue in karmic, as the notifier hint has been removed from alsa-lib, and the asoundconf tool has been removed from alsa-utils.

It is an intractable problem for me. I have a ThinkPad Z60m and have had no sound at all since "upgrading" from 8.10 to 9.04, though I do have it when running the live CD. Here's the output of asoundconf list: ~$ asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:

Note, no sound cards listed.

I have uninstalled ALSA, Pulse, reinstalled both, and all to no avail. If I can't figure this out by tomorrow, it's back to 8.10 for me...but that means backing up every damn TomTom note, bookmarks, God knows what.

This is a bug, believe me.

Could you plesae run "apport-collect -p alsa-base 5500"?

Do you also have any .asoundrc files in your home directory?
