Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Jaunty Alpha 6 has a "Indicator Applet" by default in the panel, I was researching what is this applet and wen to "Add to Panel..." and saw the "Indicator Applet" there. To confirm if that applet was the same on the panel I added it to the panel, now I can't remove it or move or do anything to it. It doesn't respond to right click or anything, that goes for the two applets.

Thank you.

The later part of the comment train (from 2009-03-20 onwards) in bug 339818 applies to this bug.

As noted by sgs in that bug, the right-click menu is accessible with the mouse pointer on the very top pixel of the screen. Otherwise, it appears that, when indicator-applet is installed, but no indicators are installed, the greyed out "No indicators" message blocks access to right-click menu over almost all of the applet's area.

So... what is this Indicator applet supposed to indicate?

Ted, so from what I understand, we just need to add a Depends: indicator-messages to indicator-applet?

Yes, I believe so. Neither is useful without the other.

That doesn't make sense to me. indicator-applet may not be *useful* without any indicator plugins installed, but that doesn't excuse its UI totally breaking in that case.

That's fair, I'm just not sure what to do. What happens is that it
builds a small menu item with the text "No Indicators" and them makes it
insensitive. Because it's insensitive it swallows all the clicks. The
only things I can think of are quite hacky. Perhaps making it sensitive
makes sense? That seems a little counter intuitive though.

Couldn't it just be a plain ordinary label widget?

Uhm. Yes. Yeah. Thanks! I was over-thinking it, thank you.

Reopening, the addition of the dependency is more a mitigating workaround than a proper fix. It's not really true, either - as soon as someone writes a second indicator module, there's a legitimate use-case for wanting indicator-applet installed without indicator-messages.

Well, I can kinda see that. But effectively this bug number is tracking
two bugs. Martin fixed the first one. I've fixed the second but it
hasn't been uploaded yet.

---------------
indicator-applet (0.1.4-0ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * New upstream version
    * Changing the text in the license box to make sense. (LP: #346215)
    * Call GNOME Program Init to initialize all of the ATK and gettext
stuff that needs to be initialized for it all to work. Patch from
      Eitan Isaacson. (LP: #349031)
    * Give the indicator applet an ATK name so it can be found by the
accessibility frameworks. Patch from Eitan Isaacson. (LP: #349031)
    * Making it so the 'No Indicators' situation uses a label instead of a
desensitized menu item to allow right click through. (LP: #346359)
    * Remove the making of 'Indicator Applet Factory' translatable.
      (LP: #349540)
    * Make sure translations get loaded and make the 'No Indicators' error
and the license translatable. Patch from Gabor Kelemen. (LP: #349998)
  * debian/control: Adding libgnomeui-dev as a dependency as it was added
    upstream.
