Binary package hint: totem
If you try to open another file with totem when totem is already running, it fails:
$ totem movie1.avi
(totem:20280): GVFS-RemoteVolu
^Z
[1]+ Stopped totem movie1.avi
$ bg
[1]+ totem movie1.avi &
$ totem movie2.avi

The running instance is not affected and continues playing the first file.
