Bug Description

UPDATE: See comments below. Bug STILL NOT FIXED when using the newer version of fglrx-installer from karmic. I presume that other karmic packages need to be installed as well as the new fglrx-installer, such as xorg or xserver packages.... but which ones? There are hundreds of X related packages available for upgrade in the karmic repositories. Remember, I'm running Jaunty.

Hi there,

Okay so i've been having a bit of trouble getting anything higher than 9.4 to run on my laptop and I'm not sure why.

I upgraded from 9.4 to 9.8 by doing the following:
sudo sh ./fglrx-uninstall.sh
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
sudo rm -r /etc/ati/
sudo chmod +x ati-driver-installer-9-8-x86.x86_64.run
sudo sh ati-driver-installer-9-8-x86.x86_64.run
sudo aticonfig --initial -f
sudo reboot now
Then when the computer rebooted I got something along the lines of "Ubuntu is now running in low graphics mode" and was given a few options, to run in low graphics for this session only, to troubleshoot the graphics, to reconfigure and one last one that I can't remember.

I logged in and my computer resolution was set to 1024x768 (it should be 1280x800 widescreen) so it was rather ugly. "Display" had no other options than 1024x768.

This is the output of running fglrxinfo:
benjamin@benjamin-laptop:~$ fglrxinfo
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 135 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 16
Current serial number in output stream: 16
And here is my lspci:

Note: I have also tried the 9.5 drivers, which gave me more trouble than 9.8. Upon boot, the screen froze on several purple and green ubuntu logos, wouldn't let me into virtual terminal at all. Had to hard reset and drop down to root shell, uninstall the ATI drivers using fglrx-uninstall.sh and then reconfigure the xorg.conf file just to be able to boot back into the desktop.

Could someone please help me?

Much appreciated,
Benjamin

EDIT: It might also be worth mentioning that I have no "Catalyst Control Center" in Applications menu like I did with 9.4.

This is the error I get when I run "sudo amdcccle" in terminal:

"There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following:

No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

Okay I upgraded to the latest 2:8.660-0ubuntu1 in Synaptic by adding karmic repositories to my sources file, but now I still get the same problem when I install the 9.8 drivers... blue/green login screen glitch and "low graphics mode."

Are there any other packages from karmic that I need to upgrade to? Perhaps the new Xorg or something? I'm very keen to get 9.8 working this month before karmic comes out because I've just bought a new Dell 24" Monitor and want to hook up my laptop via HDMI out to it - i've heard the 9.8 drivers have better support for dual monitor setups.

It's going to be a mission to get everything working properly on jaunty when all of these things are being fixed in karmic... looking at the xorg packages and dependencies that I'll need from karmic it seems that i'll have to change about 60 packages which could ruin other bits of my system. For now I guess i'll have to put up with the limited dual monitor support that 9.4 has until Karmic is released.

Sorry you had trouble getting the fixed fglrx installed on Jaunty. As a rule, proprietary driver updates are not permitted in the SRU process because SRUs must adhere to a strict policy including a careful code review, and since fglrx is closed source there is no chance of that, thus there is no need for keeping bug reports open once they're fixed in the development release.
