Bug Description

I get freezes in dapper very frequently. The don't seem to correlate with what I am doing, though I have noticed that it never has froze on the login screen even when I let it run that for a long time.

Benjamin: Can you describe the freeze in more detail? What do you see on the screen afterwards? What program(s) were you using before the freeze? Where you running any music/video/multimedia programs?

Do any of the following key-sequences work?

  Caps-lock
  Ctrl-Alt-Backspace (restart X server)
Ctrl-Alt-Del (request shutdown, leave for a minute)
  Alt-SysRq-s Alt-SysRq-u Alt-SysRq-b (low-level Sync, Unmount, reBoot)

is there any information in:

  /var/log/messages

after you have rebooted?

It freezes after (though I don't mean immediately after) I login to my
computer (and gnome starts up). It seems to work for a while but if I leave
the computer after it is logged in without running any applications it
freezes (I disabled the screensaver so it doesn't corrolate with when that
starts or anything). It also does it if I have been using an application
like firefox for a bit. It sometimes occurs soon after I begin using it but
often occurs much later, sometimes up to an hour later. The screen shows
whatever it was showing before the freeze, I just can't interact with it.

I checked /var/log/messages with the System Log viewer and it appears to
just contain the bootup messages and nothing new around the time of the
freeze.

None of those keys responded. Caps-lock didn't change the keyboard light and
the others didn't respond either.

I did a clean install of the final dapper and the crashing doesn't seem to
occur (at least it hasn't yet)

I'm having this problem again. I had it on flight 3 (or 4), then it stopped, and now it is back in the final release (I did a complete install, formating the partitions).

Usually it happens when I'm using firefox and/or apt-get (or synaptic). Sometimes it happens with few minutes, sometimes within an entire day. The only thing that appears to work is the power button, and there is nothing in the logs.

I think that I was having the same thing happen Kyller. I definately
noticed it alot when I was using firefox and apt-get though it happened just
when I was sitting on the desktop too so I didn't think the applications
were associated with it. While it doesn't seem present in my current
install, when I booted off the live cd, it did a similar and likely the same
type of freeze on the disk setup screen (this is when I was just going back
to the disk setup options - not formatting or anything).

I noticed that when it happens soon after booting up, it will likely also
happen quickly after rebooting. If it takes a while before freezing, it
seemed to have a better chance of lasting longer before freezing on reboot.
Occasionally it didn't follow this trend though and I would get things like
three quick freezes and then a long one.

I wanted to add that I also noticed it varying in frequency with the
different releases - though it never went away for me (until my last clean
install).
