Bug Description

The update manager suggests that several packages be updated, but when the update is carried out there is a file not found error (this has been happening for several days until today, 2.9.2006)

The following updates are suggested by the update manager:
dia-common 0.95.0-4ubuntu1~dapper1
dia-gnome 0.95.0-4ubuntu1~dapper1
dia-libs 0.95.0-4ubuntu1~dapper1
ktorrent 2.0.1-0ubuntu1~dapper1
libtheora-dev 0.0.0.alpha7-1ubuntu1~dapper1
libtheora0 0.0.0.alpha7-1ubuntu1~dapper1

These are the error messages from the update manager:

I am in Europe/Austria so I also wonder why Ubuntu tries to use a repository from across the globe, Australia.

Here is the content of /etc/apt/sources.list with comments removed ( grep -v '^#' /etc/apt/sources.list):
deb-src http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted

deb http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted
deb-src http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe multiverse main restricted
deb http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted

deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt dapper main

au refers to australian mirrors, hence those are being used.

However, the australian mirrors are often broken, and should get fixed automatically.

also, you probably shouldnt be using the repository at the bottom, as it is unofficial, and will likely break things.

It seems the repository contains file without that strange "~dapper1" part in the filenames that Ubuntu tries to fetch. Seems somebody messed up the information about how the filenames to fetch are named.

Just saw that this has been "rejected".

How on earth can this NOT be a bug? As I said I nowhere told the system to be so insane and use Australian mirros (that it does is probably a bug too). As an Ubuntu user I do not care what mirrors are used but I expect them NOT to be broken.

This bug has been created exactly to cause somebody fix what is broken.

How do you (who has "rejected" this bug) expect a user who is confronted with an updated manager that first suggests updates and then fails downloading them (for days!) to proceed??

And by the way, the unofficial repository has nothing to do with this problem and I use d it because Ubuntu does not provide a gems package (rubygems, something very similar to cpan).

Usually the mirrors being synced is not something controled in malone (that i know of)

However, i'm not sure why you would be using au. mirrors, when you're in europe...

This is a mirroring problem, and should not be rejected... though I'm personally not sure how to contact the mirror administrator in question.

The packages without the ~dapper1 part are not the correct packages; those are for Edgy.

For now, I recommend you switching to a non au mirror.

(the Backports guy who is responsible for those ~dapper1 packages)

Let us hope that is correct.

Just one more thing because this is truely odd: how do those mirrors get selected in the first place? I certainly never picked an Australian mirror (as I said, I am in Europe) -- so how do thise settings get in there?

I would have assumed that the system picks a mirror that is either geographically close or that dynamically is the fastest at the moment, but it seems these Australian mirrors are "hard-coded" in that configuration file ... ?

closing, the task is open on Ubuntu and that's not an Ubuntu package bug, you are not using the right media, the mirror team should be contacted. That might be already fixed on feisty with the auto mirror detection
