Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Ubuntu 10.04
I expected Firefox to open and remain on screen. Instead, it disappears after apparently closing or minimising 6 or 8 times. This is followed by Firefox seemingly tring to open again, but failing to do so. When I again click on the Firefox icon, it opens and I can use the browser. But if I minimise it, Firefox disappears into it's lair.
I cannot minimise other windows - they also disappear.
Hope you can help.
Cheers.

I'm removing the Firefox package and waiting for proper triage of the { window manger , panel , ? } problem.

Other windows disappearing hardly has something to do with Firefox.

Please open another bug specifically for the Firefox issue, once you are sure the general window minimizing problem has been isolated.

affects: firefox (Ubuntu) → ubuntu
summary: - windows disappear when minimised; Firefox 3.6.3 frequently fails to

You mean other windows rather than Firefox, right?

Which ones?

What window manager are you using?

Hi, Leo,
Many thanks for responding to my problem. I am sorry re delay in replying to you - I  have been away for a few days.

I believe my laptop uses Gnome 2.30.0 - sorry if this sounds vague, but I am not very clever about the finer details of computing. If this is wrong, perhaps you would tell me how I can determine which windows manager the computer uses.
Any window I minimise, including Firefox, disappears off screen. Bottom bar of Desktop stays empty.

I believe this started either when I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in April or when I upgraded to the latest Firefox - version 3.6.3.
Cheers,
Piers

Finally got there, thanks to your advice.
Now have the newer Ubuntu desktop, etc. and it seems more stable.
Firefox wakes up at once, the windows have stopped disappearing down a black hole at the bottom of the screen - and now minimise properly.
I am most grateful to you, Leo.
Cheers,
Piers.

It still may be a bug. You want to restore your previous
configurations and test what's wrong?
Probably you jus removed windows docking from your lower panel.

I am sorry to say that any window still disappears when using the original account.Firefox loads perfectly, however.

I am not as cheery as I was!

Do you think it would be best if I just stayed with the new user account or would you rather continue to be impressed by my ineptitude?

Piers

OK. So, if it is a bug it is related to the uses's home directory.
When you log in with the previous account, the panel in the bottom where you normally see the list of open windows and where you normally click to restore them after minimizing. Do you see them there? Do they dissapear when you minimize or are they absent since the first moment?

Thanks for your forbearance
I do not see the minimised windows in the bottom panel.
They do not appear there at all.
See attached screen shot taken a few minutes ago.

I see the screen shot.
You can right-click on the lower panel (close to the trash bin), select "add to panel" and then "window list". Does it fix your problem?
