Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

software-center trunk r841, Ubuntu 10.04

The "File" menu contains a "Login" item. Presumably this is a misspelling of "Log In". More importantly, though, it's not in the specification, and there doesn't seem to be any reason for it to exist.

Hi mpt. That "Login" menu item is for development purposes only currently. It is not of use otherwise and I agree it's confusing and incorrect to have it displayed by default, so I added some code to only enable it if software-center is launched using a command line switch ("--enable-lp").

Note fyi that this is part of development of the upcoming Buy Something feature:

  https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/foundations-maverick-buy-something

The actual implementation of this feature in Software Center will depend on the user interaction design which is currently also in-process, and I know that will be included in the Software Center spec when it's ready.

I'm sorry I was a bit abrupt in my report. I am really nervous about having experimental or half-finished stuff in trunk. During the Lucid cycle we were fortunate to get a User Interface freeze exception to remove remnants of the ratings feature, which had been developed in trunk but was not finished in time. I don't want that kind of situation to ever happen again.

So, I would much prefer all the implementation of buy-something be taking place in a branch. Then any associated developer-only menu items could be on by default in that branch, rather than off by default in trunk. Does that make sense?
