Bug Description

Release: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Package: kernel (sound)

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a new Dell ZinoHD. Fully up-to-date. The Zino has two audio output jacks: a headphone jack in the front, and a standard audio output jack in the back of the unit.

The rear audio output does not work - no sound whatsoever. The *front* headphone jack, however, *does* work.

This system also has Windows Vista installed as a dual-boot option. When running Windows Visa, both audio output ports work - which rules out defective hardware.

This problem also affects other Zino users: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1339404&page=6

I am not using the HDMI-based audio output - this problem applies to the analog 3mm output jack.

Could you please install the package linux-alsa-driver-modules-generic fro the Ubuntu Audio Dev PPA, https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive, and reboot your system. Once you reboot, could you please check te rear jack to see whether it now works?

Thanks.

Hi - thanks for the reply.

I tried installing linux-alsa-driver-modules-generic (24.201007620500) from that PPA. Rebooted. This, unfortunately, made the problem worse:

1) neither front nor back audio jack produced sound output.
2) On opening the sound applet -> preferences, the only device shown under the "hardware" tab was the RS780 Azalia HDMI controller. Previous to installing this package, the sound applet would list two hardware devices: the RS780 as above, and an "Internal audio, Analog Stereo output". This internal analog device is what I had selected in order to get the front jacks to work.

I removed the package, and rebooted. The behavior has returned as before: no audio from the rear jack, but audio from the front headphone jack.

Thanks for your help - please let me know if there is anything else I can provide to help debug this.

thanks,

-K

I have the same problem on 10.10. Audio doesn't work on either front or rear jack. Works fine in Windows. The HDMI audio works fine.

Installed 10.10 32b on Zino HD and solved all problems except this one. Analog rear jack doesn't work, front one OK. Installed alongside W7, and no audio problems at all with W7 and rear jack.

Even if the Janitor marked the bug as expired, it's still a real bug that has not been fixed yet.

I experienced the same bug, Dell Zino, RS780 Azalia audio controller and no sound at all, with the last version of Ubuntu 11.04.
I have my Zino since one year and this bug is still unsolved... I tried several distribution (not only Ubuntu or Debian), is anyone have a /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf or sound.conf that works with the Zino?

Luke, I've finally had a chance to try out the latest drivers. I installed linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32-33-generic (I'm running 10.04) and the rear audio jack now works. Fantastic. Thanks very much.

Was very excited to see this thread updated with instructions on how to install the latest drivers. Very disappointed to find it didn't work on my Ubuntu 11.04 installation, however. Has anyone else running 11.04 reported success?

This bug remains (for me) one of the two most annoying issues with my current Ubuntu installation. Hopefully a future update will find a way to resolve the problem.

I was able to get my fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit on my Zino to work.

I followed the wiki instructions Luke provided. I tried installing via command line but it couldn't find the package. Installing by Synaptic worked.

Rear audio jack works. I haven't tested fronts.
