Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Flash player crashes very often, especially watching videos on Youtube. It's almost impossible to watch a video without having it crash a couple of times.

Switching full screen mode on and off, reloading a video, and video buffering, seem to be a few things that increase the probability of crashing.

Additionally, the "send crash report" option almost always fails.

I don't think it's firefox related. I just saw the very same crash with Opera. It worked with Opera yesterday but not anymore.

I saw somewhere that deleting cookies (not sure which)would solve it for some time but it would eventually come back.

Yes it seems youtube's new layout is triggering the issue; however if the flash player plugin crash the flash player plugin has a bug that has to be fixed.

What is the correct package to report the bug to?

I think it's a problem of Flash, regardless of the browser.

Right, here is my setup to reproduce the problem:

Ubuntu: 10.10
arch: 64 bits
Firefox: 3.6.15
Flash: 10.3 d162 (64 bits from http://ppa.launchpad.net/sevenmachines/flash/ubuntu) and 10.2.152.27 (from ubuntu repository)

Steps to reproduce:

1. Point Firefox to a youtube playlist (eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1bFr2SWP1I&feature=autoplay&list=PLEDF2230BC83F482F&index=2&playnext=2 )

2. Change to another FF tab, or another window
3. Wait for the video to end

Expected result:
The next video should start playing

Actual result:
Flash crash (see attachment)

This bug is not reproducible in Opera: in Opera the next video plays normally.
Also, this didn't happen some weeks ago, so it might have been introduced in a recent upgrade.
Just for the record, my current kernel is 2.6.35-28-generic

Might be as you say, but it might as well be because in the last week YouTube has been changing its player (to fix some issues), so maybe the new version of the player does something it didn't use to do, triggering a bug in the player that was already there but didn't use to surface.

Correct me if I am wrong: those instructions are for getting a backtrace when Firefox crashes. In this case Firefox does not crash, only the flash pugin crashes. Will those steps be useful in this case as well?

> + Could you please provide step-by-step instructions that lead to the crash?

I haven't found a sequence of steps that systematically triggers the crash 100% of the times. However any of the following will ALMOST always make the plugin crash:

A) 1. open www.youtube.com
   2. add some videos to the queue
   3. play the queue
   4. wait for the first video to finish (or skip to near to the end)
=> when the following video loads, the plugin will probably crash

or

B) 1. open www.youtube.com and play any video
   2. switch to fullscreen mode
   3. exit fullscreen mode
   => crash

The latter seems to happen especially if you exit fullscreen when the video is buffering, but this may be only my impression

I attach the about:plugin page as you asked

No, I have expirienced quite a few crashes today.

Note also, that if it stops crashing at Youtube without updating the plugin, it only means that Youtube has removed on its side the code that is triggering the issue, but that does not fix the issue: the plugin has a bug that makes it crash under some circumstances (it does not matter whether it takes buggy actionscript code to make the plugin crash: the plugin must never crash whether or not the content being played is buggy)

Youtube has all the interest in having its site work whether or not adobe fixes the plugin, so it is likely that they will find a workaround and these crashes will stop; however that won't diminish the need for the plugin's own bugs to be fixed.

This was not found in Launchpad so it may help if a new package request was made for it via:

Can you guys reproduce the crash using the procedure defined in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/728778/comments/7

ie, can you make it crash by using the playlist, which in my case crashes *every time* when going to the next video while the tab is not selected?

Steps to reproduce I use (different from #7, but probably the same youtube code is executed):
1. Open any movie, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiJczH3cr48
2. Click on the dropdown next to the name of the uploader to show thumbnails of other videos uploaded
3. Click on any video in that list.
4. The page reloads and Flash crashes.

I have uploaded the terminal output and steps to reproduce (in screenshot form).
