Bug Description

Hi!

computer info:

Dell Latitude L400
Pentium 3 "coppermine" 700 mhz
ATI Mobility M 4 mb
128 mb RAM
French canadian keyboard setting (legacy)

I tried to install Xubuntu 6.10 (final stable release, from the alternate install CD) many times on my laptop, and it was always the same issue. It boots up correctly, but as soon as the graphical Xubuntu login screen it goes into suspend mode after a few seconds. When I press a key to get it back from suspend mode, the login screen appears again, and then, after 1-2 seconds it goes back into suspend mode.

The display seems to be all ok when I see the login screen, and the mouse/pointer works ok. I can use the keyboard to enter a few characters, just before it goes into suspend mode, but it does'nt seem to be related to the keyboard (or it could be, but it does'nt seem obvious).

I tried to install from the live-CD, but I had another video-related issue. Although everything seemed to boot, no display could come up when the desktop session was opening.

Please note that I've always used Xubuntu 6.06.1, I am still on it, and this version always worked perfectly for me.

Thank you!

this is most likely an ATI driver problem. You could try see if it works if you change driver to from ati vesa in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart GDM on the liveCD.

think i can exclude the video driver trouble, since disabling kdm (in my case that use kubuntu) doesn't change anything

still get the laptop suspended asap the bootsequence ends, just disabling ACPI or disabling the sleep function solves (partially) the problem

Indeed, reconfiguring Xorg did'nt changed anything. But how do I manage to disable ACPI or the sleep function?

thanks!

sorry for late reply, anyway my solution was set

ACPI_SLEEP=false
in /etc/default/acpi-support

that will prevent any functionality of sleep in your laptop

for make it boot one time and fix the acpi-support file, just stop GRUB at start and add "noacpi acpi=off" at the kernel parameters

anyway all those infos are taken from a discussion on ubuntu-users mailing list, link below:

good luck fixing your laptop!

Thanks for your bug report. I was wondering if the suggestions regarding turning acpi support off resolved your issue. Thanks in advance.

yes. Sorry for the delay answering, but this totally resolved the problem!

Bug not fixed, but at least we'll know what to fix.

6.10 still has other issues though... I'm eager to use Feisty Fawn.

I have had acpi=off in grub/menu.lst for the past number of months. Last week I upgraded to gutsy and so am now running 2.6.22-10-generic. This evening, following upgrade to latest, I tried removing the acpi=off from grub.

Now acpi_listen is totally silent and the problem has disappeared. It therefore seems to be fixed.

booting back into the old 2.6.20 kernel from feisty (with acpi enabled) causes the acpi_listen messages to recur. So, it appears the 2.6.22 kernel fixed the issue.

I can confirm that this still happens in later versions. I tried installing Mythbuntu 8.04 RC1 yesterday on my Latitude L400 and got the same problem. As you probably know, this is based on the latest Ubuntu 8.04. Furthermore, installing Suse linux 10.3 also displays the same problem.

I've tried disabling everything power-related in my bios, but that didn't solve it. The problem I now have is that the suggested solution (disabling acpi in kernel settings) doesn't work since the installer CD immediately suspends on startup and I can't modify that CD. I can't even get Ubuntu to install, let alone modify the kernel parameters.

Could this also be related to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=593334 ?

Love to hear from you,

Martin van Dijken

Hi All,

Same problem on my Dell L400 with fresh Xubuntu 8.04 install.

The Laptop used to go into sleep mode while loading X.
I followed the advices and put Sleep modes to false in /etc/default/acpi-support

Now xunbuntu load perfectly to login screen.

Problem is that the laptop go into sleep mode just after login.
I suppose that their is a bunch of "user preferences" loaded during login that overwrite the acpi default setting.

If someone could tell me where are this setting stored ?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

LoLoVioLo

I did a different thing and followed another part of Gavin's advice. I installed Ubuntu by adding acpi=off to the options at the install menu. Worked like a charm, see also http://mythbuntu.blogspot.com

Suffering from the same problem with XUbuntu and my L400. My solution was to remove the ACPI script responsible for actually putting the computer in sleep mode. That way, I can still have ACPI support enabled. I also commented the relevant line (sleep) in /etc/default/acpi-support so the system could boot.

However, I'm struggling with getting the screensaver to work properly. It never activates and I suspect it is because the sleep-key event is being constantly triggered :-( Any suggestions?

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
