Tried again booting from USB flash.
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade zero updates.
installed with launcher install button instead of desktop icon.
Went O.K.
pc has 2 hard drives, one sata one ide. Let install put grub2 default.
Turns out grub2 default was NOT the drive that boots. Lucid Lynx came up O.K., updated & installed grub
Lucid and Pangolin have /dev/sda and /dev/sdb switched.
beta 2 now running. Did get bug #964876 not a showstopper.
