Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

I changed my lcd panel to a lower resolution one (dapper). After this, boot splash used to hang. So I worked around by booting without splash, which broke on every kernel upgrade.

Recently, I found /etc/usplash.conf, changed the resolution manually to the new panel (it still had the old settings), and did a dpkg-reconfigure on usplash. That fixed the issue.

Thank you for your bug report.

Can you please detail how you changed the resolution of the display (for both dapper and feisty).

It would be really nice that (let's say) gnome-display-properties, when changing the display resolution, also adjusted usplash... but I am in doubt if this is a bug or a wish. Anyway, we need to know what you use to do that.

Also, you just need to adjust (or remove) /etc/usplash.conf.

I changed the panel itself. The lower part of the LCD crazed over, as happens with many dell laptops. The original panel was a WUXGA (1920x1200), but a replacement for that is too expensive. Hence I bought a WXGA+ (1440x900) screen.

This screen was detected immediately by the BIOS, and also by X when booted. The only problem was in usplash.conf, which still read 1920x1200 and hence the boot process would hang + blank screen when it tried to splash.

It would be great if usplash did a re-detect on boot, just as the live cd would.

My install never hanged but the usplash was always 1024x768 and then switched to 1280x1024 (native) when my desktop appeared. I followed the OP instructions and it worked like a charm. One note about my setup is that after installation, I had to manually change xorg.conf to allow for the correct res/refresh for my LCD monitor. Ubuntu defaults it as 1024x768 @ 60Hz with no higher options when the monitors native is 1280x1024 @ 60Hz (nominal) with a max refresh of 75Hz. I've already filed bug reports for that issue.

Gfx - Nvidia Ti4600 AGP (nv driver)

I am not sure usplash can re-scan on boot: at this point in time there is not much already recognised... I will check around.
