[gutsy] Tribe 5 amd64 needs more than 256MB of memory

Binary package hint: casper

ubuntu amd64 desktop and edubuntu amd64 desktop are not able to install with 256mb memory using the 20070411 build. When attempting to open the installer, the window will sometimes open but it will just be blank or it will not show up at all. At that point, the system becomes unusable and the load continues to increase. It also becomes unusable if trying to open up Firefox, OpenOffice.org Writer, or other applications.

Increasing the memory to 512 immediately solves this.

The edubuntu amd64 desktop beta from http://releases.ubuntu.com installs fine with 256mb memory.

I wonder if this is speciffic to the amd64 or to vmware. I booted the Live CD in virtualbox with 256mb and was able to launch the installer, firefox and openoffice all at once. I then booted with 192mb of ram. Even then the installer starts.

Michael, could you test the i386 version on your system?

I tried booting the Tribe 5 64 bit version of gutsy using kernel option mem=256M and the desktop didn't finish loading after waiting for about 30 minutes.

The release notes should probably be updated if this is the case. Also i386 should be tested.

I tested with an i386 daily build from 20070910.1 and destkop did finish loading however I had no gnome-panel and it was quite slow.

I think we may be screwed here. deskbar-applet is very memory-hungry, and tracker sucks a certain amount too. I don't want to increase as far as 512MB though.

We need to settle this by the end of the week in order to get CD sleeve copy ready in time. Brian, do you think you could experiment with some binary-chopping and figure out a reasonable round number that we can offer as a minimum?

Testing Hardy Heron amd64 Live CD from 20080225 with mem=384M and the desktop failed to be usable after one hour, however my laptop would have compiz enabled if the desktop session loaded.

Tested Hardy Heron amd64 Live CD from 20080225 with mem=512M and the desktop loaded, however 500M of RAM was in use. Additionally, I had now window decorations.

Tested Hardy Heron i386 Live CD from 20080225 in vmware and mem=384M and I had usable desktop. I'd guess that nobody with compiz capable hardware will have less than 640 MB of RAM.

ubiquity-only sessions allows installations on 256MB memory systems. Marking as fixed.
