Bug Description
Following today's updates to Raring Ringtail, the entire system freezes while Calibre is still showing the splash screen. The only way to get out of this is to turn the power off. CTRL+ALT+F1 does not work.

This is a recurrence of bug 805303 and its recurrence bug 1005677. :) The problem, from my experience with those bugs, is in the overlay-scrollbar packages. It arrived in raring with the update to overlay- scrollbar- 0.2.16+ r359daily12. 11.28.1 .
Downgrade the three overlay-scrollbar packages to 0.2.16+ r357-0ubuntu1 , and the problem goes away.
Or you can try running calibre with this environment variable:
LIBOVERLAY_ SCROLLBAR= 0 calibre
