Bug Description

Following today's updates to Raring Ringtail, the entire system freezes while Calibre is still showing the splash screen. The only way to get out of this is to turn the power off. CTRL+ALT+F1 does not work.

This is a recurrence of bug 805303 and its recurrence bug 1005677. :) The problem, from my experience with those bugs, is in the overlay-scrollbar packages. It arrived in raring with the update to overlay-scrollbar-0.2.16+r359daily12.11.28.1 .

Downgrade the three overlay-scrollbar packages to 0.2.16+r357-0ubuntu1 , and the problem goes away.

Or you can try running calibre with this environment variable:

  LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 calibre

affects: calibre (Ubuntu) → overlay-scrollbar (Ubuntu)

More info: this recurrence was discussed at bug 1005677, we were advised to open a new bug. Doug McMahon had some interesting notes:

"I'd start a new bug against overlay-scrollbar. At least here it's only
affecting calibre atm, vlc seems fine.
The new issue arose with the upgraded overlay-scrollbar packages -
overlay-scrollbar-0.2.16+r359daily12.11.28.1

Again at least here the problem seems to be created by the changes in
build method, not any source change. If I build the new source using the
old debian/rules then there is no issue with calibre.."

As before, 'LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0 calibre' runs Calibre OK so it does seem to be the same fault. Thanks.

It would appear that calibre benefits from the discontinued 01_workaround_qt_overlay_crash.patch which was being applied when using cdbs but not currently though the patch is still in debian/patches

Test case with updated raring:
get current overlay-scrollbar source
apply the 01_workaround_qt_overlay_crash.patch
build package set, reinstall overlay-scrollbar-gtk2_0.2.16+r359daily12.11.28.1-0ubuntu1 with the newly built .deb
log out/in
calibre should be fine
(note that the new, patched liboverlay-scrollbar.so will be slightly smaller, on my 64 bit install 73,112 bytes vs. 73,224 with the unpatched .so
