Bug Description

Compaq Presario V2335US
Win XP Pro SP3
1.85Ghz Intel Pentium M CPU, 1G Ram
Mobile/Intel 915GM/GMS, 910GML Video
Latest Video Drivers Installed

Atleast since v12 RC1, RC3 and final v12 when starting the Stellarium program I can see several square patches that are actually yellow/black checker boards where object picture files should be (Moon, M42 etc..). These picture files seem to load much slower then in previous versions and can be visible for up to 7 seconds. This problem is even worse when using the ocular plugin as the entire circular view of the ocular is a yellow/black checkerboard. Have tried at a clean install, running in opengl-1 and opengl-2 and problem still exists. It is not that it does not work as in previous versions the object pictures took a few seconds to load as well but there was not the checker flag washing out everything else. It eventually loads the object picture and goes away but this is certainly not a step forward.

As fact this two reports - this and #1114645 - describe one problem - not enough memory for textures loading. We can hide visual effect for this issue but we can't solve root of problem - size of videomemory.

This worked fine in 11.4, same computer. It did take a few seconds for the object to appear but during the loading there was no Yellow/Black checkerboard. If there is a way to stop/block the checkerboard that would be Ok. I tested this on an other computer using ATI AGP video card with 512M onboard video memory and it also does this but only for a spit second. The laptop displays the checkerboard for up to 7 seconds.

Hmm... This is odd. Can you give log.txt from other computer (which using ATI AGP)?

Here is another screenshot of this problem from the Laptop, It shows that this is happening to all the object pictures, not just one of them, during normal mode not using any plugins. This is after doing a clean install and having first deleted the old config file and starting with a clean, new install. These patches/checkerboards are visible for up to 7 seconds on the laptop. On the Desktop with ATI 512M AGP card they appear but vanish within a split second but they do appear. Hope this may help. V11.4 did not have this problem.

Not so sure this is fixed, I no longer see the yellow/black checkerboard but while the background image is still loading I do see some sort of nebula cloud. It is the same nebula cloud that displays regardless of object I am looking at. This would be much better to display nothing untill the actual background loads.

I think you need press I to disable all textures for nebulae.
