Power usage is a hot topic for computer users everywhere. For some, it's a matter of how long a laptop lasts without being plugged in. For others, it's controlling the temperature of hundreds of systems within a datacenter. For all of us, it's about keeping the electricity bill under control and being kind to the environment.

Getting your computer to use the least amount of power can be problematic. This site provides information on reducing power usage, tips, and tricks for Intel-based computers running Linux*.

As a first step, Intel is releasing PowerTOP, a tool that helps you find what software is using the most power. By fixing (or closing) these applications or processes, you can immediately see the power savings in the tool. You'll also see the estimated time left for battery power if you are running a laptop.

Ralf,

That's not a reason for not sync it.

Either Debian will package it, and we'll automatically sync it, or we will package it.
But Debian has 1.1 at the moment, and we are based on Debian (and we sync packages from Debian).

I've been playing with powertop today, very easy to compile, just a single make file. It shows the C states stats but says: "No detailed statistics available; please enable the CONFIG_TIMER_STATS kernel option"

It also recommends you enable the CONFIG_NO_HZ kernel configuration option for best performance, which is in 2.6.21

Scott:

Looks like that was changed by Ben in the 2.6.22-3 kernel:
   * build/config: Enable CONFIG_TIMER_STATS

Processed through NEW. For future reference, you don't need to file bugs for syncs of new packages from Debian before the Debian import freeze.

Nice! I guess everyone is eager to test this stuff ;-)

Colin, the request was originally made as a needs-packaging bug since at that time there were no Debian packages, yet.
