Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt

The feisty-updates repository is not enabled by default after a clean install.

I reproduced this on 2 different laptops. On both of them I installed the AMD64 version of Ubuntu 7.04.

On one of them I did the installation about a week ago and have since installed all the updates.

I had to manually enable it in Synaptic / Settings / Repositories in the "Updates" tab

I can confirm this, same happened on all three different computers where I installed Feisty (and others also told me about that).

Is this a bug or is it like this for some reason?

Bug #125986 in flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu)
first reported on 2007-07-14 by Jef
[MASTER] No flash after update of flashplugin-nonfree
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+bug/125986

A very important security update to the widely-used Flash plugin is not automatically downloaded to users because the updated flashplugin-nonfree package (that is, the installer that downloads the latest version of Flash) was put in feisty-updates.

Although I can't say I had this problem with Feisty (mind you I distupgraded from Edgy...), I have to admit that the "Wishlist" priority on this bug seems to be somewhat improper in this case. Aren't updates more important than that? In this case (Flash), this happens to be a security update.

Just my $0.02 on the issue.

I don't see how this could happen; the installer should always add it. Please attach /var/log/installer/syslog from an affected system to this bug.

I am attaching the requested /var/log/installer/syslog file off a fresh amd64 Feisty server install. I'm not sure, maybe just the regular desktop install is affected? However, my /var/log/installer/syslog file shows that the feisty-updates repositories were consulted during the install. Furthermore, as seen below, all my apt list files have the feisty-updates repositories enabled out of the box:

===============================================
rouben@feisty:~$ grep -v ^\# /etc/apt/sources.list | grep updates
deb http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-updates main restricted
deb-src http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-updates main restricted
===============================================

What I'm trying to say is that I am *unable* to reproduce this issue on a fresh install of Feisty server amd64 edition.

There was a problem here where -updates wasn't enabled for universe and multiverse; that would indeed have bitten flashplugin-nonfree. This was fixed a while back, in Ubuntu 7.10:

apt-setup (1:0.21ubuntu2) gutsy; urgency=low

  * If either restricted or multiverse is enabled, add commented-out lines
    for the commercial component (LP: #118002).
  * Add -updates for universe and multiverse, if enabled.
