Bug Description

Binary package hint: udev

Hi,

I just bought a portable MP4 player. This player (Ainol U60) is using Linux so I figured I shouldn't have any problem with it. Well, I was wrong: Ubuntu is not able to mount it (although Windows XP can).

It should just work as an usb key (mass storage).

When I plug it under linux, here is what I have in /var/log/messages:
Aug 6 17:12:00 chris-laptop kernel: [119887.560000] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off
Aug 6 17:12:00 chris-laptop kernel: [119887.560000] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] READ CAPACITY failed
Aug 6 17:12:00 chris-laptop kernel: [119887.560000] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Result: hostbyte=DID_NO_CONNECT dr
iverbyte=DRIVER_OK,SUGGEST_OK
Aug 6 17:12:00 chris-laptop kernel: [119887.560000] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense not available.

I noticed that it successfully created /dev/sdb, so I tried to mount it manually:
root@chris-laptop:/home/chris# mount /dev/sdb /media/removable/
mount: /dev/sdb: can't read superblock

When it is mounted on windows it says in it fat32 filesystem, so I tried this:
root@chris-laptop:/home/chris# mount -t vfat /dev/sdb /media/removable/
mount: /dev/sdb: can't read superblock

I don't know what information I should give you but tell me and I'll be more than happy to provide them.

# cat /proc/usb
cat: /proc/usb: No such file or directory

why is that?

/proc/bus/usb/ exists but it is empty.

Please note, that the Ainol u60 is the only device connected at the moment
to avoid having useless info.

I recompiled the kernel with CONFIG_USB_STORAGE_DEBUG=y and here is the output when I plug the Ainol in:

I filled a report at http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8846

They advised to disable this:
CONFIG_SCSI_SCAN_ASYNC

because of a bug in scsi core. Maybe Ubuntu should do the same until the bug is fixed upstream?
See my logs, this is causing a oops.

Hi Christophe,

I'm retargeting this against the upcoming Hardy kernel release (ie the hardy-kernel-candidate tag). However against the linux-source-2.6.22 package this does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked at "Won't Fix". You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . Thanks!

Hi Christophe,

After examining the upstream bugzilla report, it looks like progress to resolve the bug has stopped? I'm curious if you can confirm the issue still exists in the recent kernel releases. The Hardy Heron Alpha series was recently released. Alpha2 and subsequent releases contain an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .

I'm still using Gutsy right now, I'll update to Hardy and report back. However, I doubt that this will be fixed, I reported the bug on the kernel bugtracker and there was no progress either. They tried at first but none of their patches worked.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

This bug report is being closed because we received no response to the previous inquiry for information. Please reopen if this is still an issue in the current Ubuntu release, Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. If the issue remains in Jaunty, please test the latest upstream kernel build - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . To reopen the bug, click on the current status under the Status column and change the status back to "New". Thanks.
