Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

I have not found any way to open the job queue window for a printer (in my case: for the PDF printer). The only possible way seems to be to print something and then click on the status icon in the panel. But I would have expected to also find the queue via the "Printer" entry in the system config menu (which opens s-c-p).

So I think it would be nice if s-c-p would have a button that opens the job queue window (the same window that can be reached via the panel icon). Or the job queue could be embedded as another tab (but then again, for consistency it might be better if the job queue is always displayed in the same way, that is: in the small window).

[this is with s-c-p 0.7.75+svn1566-0ubuntu1 , on Gutsy Tribe 5, in a Virtualbox-OSE virtual machine]

You should have a 'Manage Print Jobs' main menu entry somewhere, although it might be hidden by default.

Yes, a 'View Jobs' button (perhaps under 'Tests and Maintenance'?) could be useful although it exposes a graphical interface for masquerading as another user when cancelling jobs.

I didn't find a "Manage Print Jobs" item anywhere on the system; and also I think that the main printer control panel should have some button for the job queue (so all things related to the printers can be reached from one place). A button under Test and Maintenance sounds good in my opinion.

How could the user masquerade as another user with such a button? Is s-c-p started as root? Anyway: if the user has to enter the root pw (or the sudo pw) for starting s-c-p he should also be able to cancel jobs from other users. Otherwise he should of course only be able to cancel his own jobs.

The fix has been placed under "Applications-Accessories-Manage Print Jobs", but it really should be under "System-Administration-Manage Print Jobs". That's where you find the "Printing" menu. Putting these two closely related apps in separate menus is quite confusing. It confused me enough that I wound up reporting it as a duplicate but (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151064).

As an addendum to what I wrote just above, I think the menu item should also be renamed. Less confusing (and also shorter) would be:

System-Administration-Print Jobs

This would have the added advantage of being in alphabetical order ("Print Jobs" would appear just above the "Printing" menu item).

Managing a user's own print jobs is not system administration.

As for masquerading: it depends upon the configuration of CUPS. The default upstream CUPS configuration allows masquerading trivially and without a password.
