Bug Description

Before i was using a sound blaster live! 24 bit, and had a headset that plugged into the sound card. Recently i reinstalled windows so i decided to try my luck removing that sound card and seeing how well my computer ran with onboard sound, so i removed the sound card and combined with my logitech usb headset and some configuring i got sound to work

the only problem is, that every time i try and change the volume, either by the volume media buttons on my keyboard or by using the mouse wheel over the volume applet in gnome, it reverts back to 40% no matter if i raise it or lower it, and then i can control it and raise/lower it to my desired level

I did a cat /proc/asound/modules and i believe the sound driver im using is snd_usb_audio

if you need anything else.... just ask.

Just discovered this same thing here when I noticed my knob was working on my dell keyboard.

Volume is at 100%, if I turn it up it sets the volume to 40%. It goes down smooth but any up action puts it at 40%. Also when it moves up and down it turns the bass control up and down.

The card is a SB Audigy2 using the emu10k1 module.

System is Kubuntu Hardy.

I set the global shortcuts in kmix too but whatever this is seems related to whatever the popup OSD for the volume display is possibly. Actually whatever that is I'd like to just disable it and use kmix even without an onscreen display.

I removed kmilo (the osd) and set the global shortcuts in kmix for the master. The knob works as expected now so it's whatever kmilo and the gnome volume thing interact with at the system level I guess since the original reporter is using gnome (none of that here).

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 alpha?

This irky behaviour is also in 8.10, but in smaller scale. On Hardy is almost impossible to set right volume, in Ibex you can at least try. But it still jumps up and down.

Mark Grandi, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
