Bug Description

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

In Gutsy, system-config-printer should not add a 'Manage printing tasks' menu item in Applications -> System tools but rather to Applications -> Accessories, or to System -> Administration, or even hide it.

The reason for this is that by default, it is the only item in System tools, so it makes an icon more appear in the Application menu, which is useless, annoying for the user and inefficient since you make the UI more complex. Furthermore, I'm not sure we really need this menu item, since a notification icon is shown when something is going on with the printer(s). Maybe hiding it would be the smarter.

Involved file: usr/share/applications/redhat-manage-print-jobs.desktop

Just edit the file usr/share/applications/redhat-manage-print-jobs.desktop
* To hide (best solution IMHO, worth to be discussed)
add (e.g. at the end): "NoDisplay=true"

* To move to a category, change the line "Categories=GTK;Monitor;System;X-Red-Hat-Base;": remove "System" and:
  - add "Utility" for Accessories
  - add "System;Settings" for Administration

Milan, thanks for your help. Hiding the menu entry is the upstream default, but then bug 144113 appeared. To fix this I have set "NoDisplay=false" but I did not move the entry to another menu. I will move the entry to the "Accessories" menu. There is also the "kjobviewer" if KDE is installed.

Anyone in the Ubuntu Upload Sponsors team for Main, can you upload the new package in

Steve Langasek told that it is OK with the release freeze.

Thanks in advance.

Very good! As regards the issue of hiding the menu item, in relation with bug 144113, it could be nice in the future to have a button in the config tool, this would make much more sense. So these two bugs are linked. Could you reopen bug 144113 with a low priority, until this gets implemented?

I think one does not really need a button in system-config-printer to show or hide the menu entry for the job manager. You can configure all menu entries via "Preferences"/"Main Menu"

I meant: just hide the menu item and replace it by a button in s-c-p that would show the printer queue. This would be smarter and easy to find (just like gnome-cups-manager did work). But that's future work, I think.

Could I add here a detail that can be fixed easily? No need to open a new bug.
The icon of the "Manage printing tasks" item is always blurry. Actually, it's not the same as the one used by Administration -> Printing, which is themed and clean. The former is likely not to be available at the right size (22x22, 24x24 and/or SVG).
The best would be to use the latter icon, since they are both quite similar printers, we can use the same for both.

system-config-printer (0.7.75+svn1653-0ubuntu2) gutsy; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/10_menu_entries.patch: Let menu entry for displaying
queued jobs appear in the "Accessories" menu and not under "Systemn
Tools". "Systemn Tools" is KDE-specific (LP: #149529).
  * debian/patches/20_match_more_printers.patch: Do best match by
"most important word" case-insensitive. This matches especially
the Canon printers correctly with the Gutenprint PPDs (LP: #149264).
