Bug Description

A fresh install of the latest release of Mythbuntu (currently the 1002 release) has at current 114mb of updates. Can we get an option where during the install it will grab updated packages from the net rather than installing outdated packages from the CD?

This will also help in the future with installation problems etc. ie: If after release it is found that there is a problem with xyz function that may even cause problems with the installation itself, having the ability to simply publish a new version of the package to the update system will allow that "bugged" release to still be fully functional.

Of course, still allow the option to *not* update from the web... but I would say to let the default options install any updated packages that it finds...

Packages aren't installed from the CD for anything but video drivers, NFS, VNC, or xmltv. Everything else is already on disk. A new disk will be remastered for RC in approximately one week.

Changed in mythbuntu:

Also, remember once final release is out, packages won't be updated nearly as frequently.

How is "everything already on disk" when the disk hasn't even been partitioned yet? My point is that for a fresh new install, everything is already out of date. This will be even more evident after the final release *because* the releases will be much more spaced out, leaving more time for other packages (within the ubuntu base as well as directly mythbuntu) to be updated.

Personally, I don't see the harm in adding the option to install updated packages. BUT, I also don't know if this would be a programing nightmare to implement. If that is the reason for not doing it, then I can understand marking it down to a low priority. BUT, I don't see why it should be totally ruled out...

Well by "on disk" i mean on the live disk. For an alternate install disk this
is entirely feasible (and i'd prefer to do it this way). For live disks, it is
indeed a major nightmare. You can't have a disk with predictable
problems/milestones to meet.

If you think back to alpha 4, it was a very stable disk : even though a TON was
broke between beta and alpha 4. If it was the other way around, people would
have broken alpha 4 installs immediately.
