Bug Description

I have a Toshiba Satellite M45-S265. I just install Ubuntu 7.10 and the sound does not work, at all. The first sound that brings the login page was working, but that was all. After I tried several fixing procedures, that does not work anymore. A couple of times, for no reason at all, the sound worked, but after I reboot the system, it disappeared. I don't know what should I do. I am getting very frustrated. Any ideas?

Marcelo

Booting with option irqpoll works well on gutsy with linux 2.6.22.
On hardy booting with irqpoll the system become almost unusable. The mouse is unresponsive, but works well with a big workload (seems related with dynamic tick).
Booting without irqpoll the sound doesn't works and neither the usb ports.

The following works for gutsy:

Edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst as root

look the line that starts with:
# defoptions=

Append irqpoll to the end of the line

Execute $sudo update-grub in the terminal.

Reboot the system.

Hi All,

If you are running Gutsy, please also try installing the linux-backports-modules package which has an updated version of ALSA.

If you are running Hardy, the linux-ubuntu-modules package will have the updated version of ALSA.

Thanks.

Hi,

Has you can see, I'm running Hardy with linux-ubuntu-modules package from the last kernel available.
I keep running ubuntu with irqpoll since edgy, but now the system became unresponsive so it's not an option.

hi,

I added irqpoll as you suggested and the sound works just fine, as well as the usb ports that were not working before.

Thanks.

This problem still happens with linux-image-2.6.24-11-generic and linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-11-generic.

One thing to check when running the newer Hardy release is that all sound levels are unmuted and turned up. Hardy has ALSA version 1.0.16 which mutes some sound levels by default. If the issue still persists, care to run the alsa-info.sh script described in the "Automatic Sound Information Collection" section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems and attach the output to this bug report? Also note that we'll keep this open against the actively developed kernel bug against 2.6.22 this will be closed. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Thanks for the update. I'm setting this to "Fix Released". mdottori, since you are the original bug reporter, if this is not resolved for you with the newer Intrepid kernel please set the status back to "New". Thanks.

Marcelo, regarding the error you are now seeing, I believe if you boot with "irqpoll" the message will go away. Thanks.
