Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in mplayer

What version of ubuntu are you using ? (uname -a)
Is this problem systematic ?
Does it only happen with a particular video file or with all video files ?

   thanks,

Hi, can you please update to 1.0~rc2 and try again? This is one of the things that may have been addressed with the new version. Thanks.

I'm changing the status of this bug back to New because it still effects Ubuntu 8.04 and I've located the cause.

The problem is not wrong display of video but wrong timing of audio. Mplayer's libmad support is *known broken*. libmad fails to keep correct time under mplayer when playing video with VBR MP3 audio. See http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mplayer-dev-eng/2008-January/055849.html for more details.

This is a bug with Ubuntu's mplayer package as mplayer does not default to libmad for decoding! Mplayer upstream defaults to mp3lib, which does not exhibit this problem.

This bug was fixed in the package mplayer - 2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu6

---------------
mplayer (2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu6) karmic; urgency=low

  [ Andres Mejia ]
  * Enable VDPAU support by including vdpau headers in deb packaging.

  [ Reinhard Tartler ]
  * sort build dependencies alphabetically
  * avoid using tabs - prefer space instead
  * reenable 22disable-xscreensaver.patch. The patch does work, but you
    need to have the mouse cursor INSIDE the window
  * don't build-depend on libmad, the internal mp3lib library is superiour
    for most cases these days, according to upstream. LP: #111025, #163382
  * add clarifications to the libgsm license.
  * install the TOOLS/midentify.sh script LP: #333828
