Bug Description

Binary package hint: language-pack-en

Running Kubuntu 7.10 and Adept asked me to download an update to the English language pack - so I did.

Now at the bottom of the Dolphin windows it displays "BROKEN TRANSLATION".

I'm using British English as my default language in the system settings, but if I change to US English the text is corrected. Nice piece of QA chaps ;-)

Where do I get the previous version of "language-pack-en" so I can get rid of the error?

Sorry, should have added, the version I know seem to have is "1:7.10+20071120".

I have just found 1:7.10+20071012 from the Ubuntu Wiki so hopefully I can revert to a working British English version.

My default language is Italian and I have added English GB and US,

D3lphin shows Broken translation even with my default language,

I've done some testing and can confirm that having EN-GB among the chosen languages makes this "BROKEN TRANSLATION" message to appear.

The problem lies in the file /usr/share/locale-langpack/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/d3lphin.mo -- there are three translations at the end of the file that are missing their plural versions.

For example, an original string is:

_n: 1 Item\n
%n Items

And the translated string is:

1 Item

The Translated string should be:

1 Item\n
%n Items

I fixed it on my machine by running msgunfmt on the mo file to convert it to a po file, making the changes in KBabel and then using msgfmt to return it to an mo file. I've no idea where to find the source po files or I'd offer up a patch!

I can confirm that TheFluffyOne's solution works. I am on the en_GB team, but at present, every time I try to open the d3lphin translation page, I get a timeout error. I'll keep trying.

OK, I've updated the translations in launchpad--next time changes are synced (I'm afraid I have no idea when that happens), it should be resolved.

Any update on this? Don't know if there's any special steps needed to install the updated language pack but it hasn't shown up on any of my systems yet. Also en_GB here.

The current version of the language pack in the repo is still from 27th November 2007, so the updates definitely haven't made it there yet.

Here's a working d3lphin.mo file you can use temporarily until the updated translations are released.

Rename your existing file and put this in its place as:

/usr/share/locale-langpack/en_GB/LC_MESSAGES/d3lphin.mo

I contacted the package maintainer, Martin Pitt, and he suggested adding the repo for daily snapshots to sources.list:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-langpack/ubuntu gutsy main

The version there (currently 08/01/2008) works correctly, however after adding the new apt source it wouldn't recognise that I had already installed the updates; apparently this is a known problem with the software running the repository so I just disabled it after running the update.

The current version of the language pack is expected to be uploaded to the main repos around once per month, so I guess we just need to be patient and the fix will make it in! :)

If you run Dolphin from a console window, what output do you get?

I'm getting again the same error Alessandro is. It did go away when I downloaded and manually changed the d3lphin.mo as here advised.

Anyway, the command in the console should be d3lphin. The output is: d3lphin: ERROR: translation of "1 Item" doesn't contain 2 different plural forms as expected.

I'll try the d3lphin.mo again as an update came and briought back the error .

There's a symlink from "dolphin" to "d3lphin" so it shouldn't matter which you run.

The problem with the PPA source constantly wanting to upgrade seems to have gone away, so you should be able to leave that in after running the update now.

I'm guessing this means that the update *still* hasn't made it into the main repos :(

Aw, right!

I tried the d3lphin.mo linked above, but it doesn't make any difference this time.

And console still says:

lanzen@ikkyu2:~$ dolphin
d3lphin: ERROR: translation of "1 Item" doesn't contain 2 different plural forms as expected
d3lphin: WARNING: Pixmap not found for mimetype application/pgp-keys
