Thank you for your comments. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would appear that the CD image (ISO file) you downloaded could be corrupt. There is an easy way to verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you download. For more information, please visit https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM test the ISOs you have downloaded and report back. Thanks in advance.

Hi freetools,

Just a few comments here. You might want to also take a look at bug 153096 and try some of the workarounds posted there. Please let us know if any work for you. Also the Hardy Heron kernel was recently uploaded for testing. We'd really appreciate it if you could try testing with this newer kernel and verify if this issue still exists. Unfortunately, the Hardy Heron Alpha1 LiveCD was released with the older 2.6.22 kernel. You'll have to manually install the newer Hardy Heron kernel in order to test. This should not be the case for Alpha2. However, here are the instructions to install (if you choose to do so):

1) edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following line:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted

2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic
4) reboot and select the new kernel from the grub menu

After you've tested, please feel free to revert back - ie boot into the old kernel, sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic, and remove the line from /etc/apt/sources.list . Please update this report with your results. Thanks in advance!

I have updated to 2.6.24-5-generic kernel and the error have changed from "ata1.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40)" to "ata3.00: failed to read native max address (err_mask=0x4)"

I think it's a incompatibility with the motherboard "Abit IB9".
I don't know if it would be better to post in a new bug report or here, sorry if I don't do it correctly.

H MoBeR,

Can you try booting with the 'irqpoll' option. That will at least hopefully get rid of one of the errors I was noticing in your dmesg output. Care to then reattach your new dmesg output?

Also I just wanted to add another note here. Hardy Alpha 4 will be out within the next day or two. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. It's typically easier than having to manually install the kernel as you have been doing. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks!

I'm having this problem on an Abit IP35Pro board, but only when I have two SATA2 hard drives attached (two identical Western Digital drives: 500GB SE16). I also have a SATA CD/DVD burner, but it seems to have no effect on the problem. Having only one of the hard drives attached boots fine. Booting with irqpoll seems to fix it. I get a few errors:

ata5.00 qctimeout (cmd 0x27)
ata5.00 failed to read native max address (err_mask=0x40)
ata5.01 revalidation failed (errno=-5)
ata5.01 failed to IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x40)

I get those errors when booting 32- or 64-bit hardy, and Foresight 2. With my existing 32-bit gutsy install, I get dumped to a busybox prompt with no errors when both SATA drives are attached.

I too have had many issues running Ubuntu since Feisty on an Abit IB9 motherboard, receiving errors such as above.

I tried to install Hardy via Wubi and also received the same error. I decided to try the alternate cd to see if I would have any luck there.

Setup:
Abit IB9
Intel Pentium D 2.66Ghz
4GB 800Mhz DDR2
1x 500GB SATAII drive
1x NEC DVDRW - IDE connector

At first it booted ok into the installer, which was further than I had gotten before and the install process completed successfully, however upon a reboot the system would not boot and it turned out that the boot sequence was for some reason detecting my USB external disk. I disconnected this and tried to re-run the installer, this time however it would not boot suggesting I tried the 'irqpoll' option on the boot line. I did this and got got into the installer but it would not find my hard disk at all.

I went into the BIOS and switched the IDE Bus Master mode to Disabled (Under Integrated Peripherals). I then ran the installer with the irqpoll and all_generic_ide options which then detected the HDD and installed OK. I ran a dmesg during this and there were none of the above errors showing.

After this install had finished and rebooted I again encountered the same error. I edited the boot line to add the irqpoll option and lo and behold everything booted up (and pretty quickly)!

I have tested also switching back on the IDE Bus Master mode and connecting my external disk during boot and neither have had any adverse affects.

Apologies for this long comment but I hope it is of some help. I'm happy to finally being able to run Ubuntu on this machine!!

This is still happening with everything up-to-date as of today. I have to reset my machine many times to get it to boot, or use irqpoll. Is there any chance of this getting fixed in hardy at all?

Using irqpoll I can get the system to boot every time, is there no way of incorporating this directly into the kernel so I won't have to type it in/edit config files?

Hi Guys,

I just quickly chatted with the ubuntu kernel team. Unfortunately an SRU (stable release update) to add quick support for you systems most likely won't be done. However, care to test the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 kernel? If this issue still exists, we can try to get it resolved there. It was most recently rebased with the upstream 2.6.25 kernel (which contains the patch you've referenced) and is currently available in the following PPA:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive

If you are not familiar with how to install packages from a PPA basically do the following . . .

Create the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kernel-ppa.list to include the following two lines:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main

Then run the command:

sudo apt-get update

You should then be able to install the linux-image-2.6.25 kernel package. After you've finished testing you can remove the kernel-ppa.list file and run 'sudo apt-get update' once more. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

I'm going to try and install Ubuntu 8.01 (Hardy) with kernel 2.6.24-19-generic threw IDE optical.
If it installed well I'll post here and everywhere else.

There is a new beta released for Ubuntu 8.10 with kernel 2.6.27.
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha6
(I do not recommend installing this on the Abit IB9 mobo!)
Read the WARNINGS on the alpha 6 page!

When the new Ubuntu (8.10) Intrepid Ibex with kernel 2.6.27 is final on October 30th I will hope all Abit IB9 bugs are fixed.

Any thoughts on continuing this topic anyone?
I'm sure this will not be the end of the problems.

Good luck, Grams79

This bug was reported a while ago but there hasn't been any recent comments or updates. Is this still an issue with the latest pre-release of Jaunty 9.04? Refer to http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/jaunty/beta . Please let us know.

I have changed the title of the bug to reflect that it need not be specific just to the 7.10 release.
