Bug Description
Can't say 23meg didn't warn me.
This was a triple boot system,
Partition 1 Hardy
Partition 2 Home
Partition 3 Xubuntu no more!
Partition 4 Hardy, back level. no more!
For the last year, Dapper, Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy, on partitioning, I do manual, edit the desired / partition for format, then edit the /home. Other Ubuntu's on the hard drive even Windoze 98 stayed alive.
If for some reason something blows, then I used to have a couple other partitions to boot.
That worked fine on Hardy until Alpha 4.
Not only was partition 1 formatted, but Partition 3 and Partition 4 as well, even though they were not marked for formatting, and the install said only Partition 1 and the swap partition were to be formatted. Wrong, it formatted all the partitions except /home, I believe without telling me about it. I'll try again to make sure.
Oops. I didn't lose any data, but that was a shock to realize putting Hardy Alpha 4 on a hard disk wipes out all the other distributions as well. The partitions exist but they are just empty, not even Lost + Found.
Looks like Ubuntu dual boot/triple boot/quad boot function that I've been using is dead.
This scenario has happened to me twice in the last 2 days. Let me try again tomorrow to see if I can get a clue.

Wierd. I did a df, which is of course after the Hardy Alpha 4 install:
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on 2.6.24- 5-generic/ volatile
/dev/sda1 10072456 2371724 7189064 25% /

Note that sda3 was an Xubuntu and sda6 was a Gutsy Alpha before the Hardy Alpha 4 install on sda1, should have been 20+% used, etc.
I tried an fdisk on sda3, which was a running Xubuntu, and got this wild report:
jerry@Compaq:~$ sudo fdisk /dev/sda3
[sudo] password for jerry:
Device contains neither a valid DOS partition table, nor Sun, SGI or OSF disklabel
Building a new DOS disklabel with disk identifier 0xe4daca65.
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
After that, of course, the previous content won't be recoverable.
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 2375.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Warning: invalid flag 0x0000 of partition table 4 will be corrected by w(rite)
Looks to me like the partition table entry for sda3 is all screwed up.
Here's fdisk for sda6 which was a running Hardy Alpha:
jerry@Compaq:~$ sudo fdisk /dev/sda6
Device contains neither a valid DOS partition table, nor Sun, SGI or OSF disklabel
Building a new DOS disklabel with disk identifier 0x1e4834a6.
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
After that, of course, the previous content won't be recoverable.
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 1911.
That one's all screwed up as well.
Now this entry, the df, the fdisk, and the install that started all this are all from the Hardy Alpha 4.
