Bug Description

Since update to version 23.04 I am facing several problems related to system suspend and shutdownon a HP Envy 15 notebook (2016). The system refuses to wake up from standby mode, especially if it has run for a longer time. Screen is black, no response to keyboard or trackpad actions, power button led is on. The only way out of here is a long press on the power button.

Another problem with this and I think it's kind of related. If you want to shut down the computer after a long runtime, the machine won't power off. In the logs you can see the steps for shutting down the OS, but sometimes the machine stays powered on. The power led is on, screen is black, no response to keyboard or trackpad actions. System has to be powered off by a long press on the power button.

Can you test the proposed kernel as explained in comment #3?

Is this really a duplicate of #2029332? I never faced a reboot when I issued a shutdown. My problem is the awake from suspend mode and switching the machine completely off after shutdown. May it is related with the other issue maybe the same cause but the effects are different. So I can't make a sure statement that it's really the same.

Unfortunately, I also have to report that at least the problem with waking up has returned in the meantime. I had done a series of tests, the computer was suspended overnight, several sleep and wake cycles in a row. Everything what caused problems before was looking fine. But during the use in the last few days I had the waking problem again. Whenever the computer is not connected to the mains.

So the new kernel might brought a slight improvement but solved the problem not completely.

Well sometimes it even happens when on mains. After the machine stays all day long on, connected to mains, several suspends for testing purposes, it refuses to power off when I tried to shutdown late the evening.

It seems that it is something time related. But I can't see any pattern.

I also have the same problem.

After updating to Kernel 6.2 a few days ago, I have been experiencing issues with my system's shutdown and reboot functions. During these processes, the system becomes unresponsive and hangs on a black screen, which displays both the Dell and Ubuntu logos. This issue is inconsistent; it happens sporadically. Currently, the only workaround I've found to successfully shut down the system is to forcibly power off the machine by holding down the power button for 5 seconds.

I've also tested a fresh installation of Ubuntu 22.04.3.

I have a Dell Machine XPS 8930.

And I do not use the "Nouveau driver" as described in a similar bug in: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-hwe-6.2/+bug/2031352

I reported this bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-hwe-6.2/+bug/2031352, but the bug was mistakenly changed to look like it is a bug with the Nouveau drivers. So the issue was not fixed.

I have attached the last shutdown logs

@cfgnunes: Please do not hijack and mangle other people's reports.

I did not have this experience with 22.04.3 LTS. The logs and the description belong to 23.04. Changing only the summary is pointless.
Maybe the problem exists in other Ubuntu versions too. It probably has to do with kernel version 6.x.
So if someone has also had this experience with another installation, it makes sense to file a report for this as well. Marking it as a duplicate will generate more heat on the issue.

@polarbaerhh, first and foremost, I expect both myself and others to be treated with respect. It was inappropriate for you to suggest that I was maliciously hijacking and mangling your report. Please be mindful of your words.

I will not tolerate being treated this way. I'm providing information to help resolve the bug in the best possible manner. Furthermore, I aim to act professionally and communicate assertively.

I refined the bug description based on your feedback to assist developers in investigating the problem.

It's worth noting that I reported a bug under https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2031352, and a Canonical employee modified the bug description to a different issue unrelated to the one I initially described. That same employee later apologized and asked me to add more details to this bug report.

Sorry, but that was a kind request, very respectful. Not with a single word I did imply any malicious intent. How respectful is this treatment of other people's wording? Anyway, it just doesn't make sense to mix these things up, as mentioned earlier. Even if it will end up with the same cause, a bug in a certain 6.x kernel.

I can confirm that in my case I was experiencing this problem on 22.04 so
indeed both are affected.
