Start a windows VM (generally w10, w11, w8.1).
Update the guest additions from iso pack inside the VM.
Reboot the VM.
Check if the VM starts correctly and the acceleration works.
Start a linux VM (generally ubuntu LTS or Debian stable).
Update the guest additions from iso pack inside the VM.
Reboot the VM.
Check if the VM starts correctly and the acceleration works.
Remove guest additions and install the virtualbox-guest-x11 package (linux only).
Check if vboxdrv is correctly built, check if *.ko modules are built on the target linux VM.

The [ Possible regressions ] section of the bug description should be renamed to 'Where Problems Could Occur' and include information about where problems could occur not a statement about upstream testing.

Additionally, to make things easier for any testers the [ Test Plan ] should contain more details about how to test virtualbox and what scenarios to test. I mentioned this in the last SRU of virtualbox, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox-guest-additions-iso/+bug/2017101/comments/28, using details from the microrelease exception wiki page.

Host OS: Ubuntu 23.10.

Guest OSes: Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 23.10.

Everything seemed to go as planned, however with 3d acceleration enabled the start button in Windows 8.1 turned black when hovered over. Not sure why. However with the previous version of VirtualBox installing Guest Additions and then switching to 3d acceleration killed the VM entirely, so, I'm inclined to say than unless I've hit a transient glitch with the older VirtualBox, we at least have an upgrade from before!

Hello all,

first, thanks for all the testing that several people spent time on!

I'm trying to gauge whether the test plan was followed appropriately. Some of the things are perhaps implied, like, when a tester says "3d acceleration worked", that might imply that, I don't know, vboxdrv built, or that guest-additions was installed. This is the key thing: I'm not familiar with virtualbox, and don't know for sure.

Specifically, the SRU description asks for these tests:
"""
Install virtualbox inside the VM and check if it can start correctly.
"""

In the absence of clear statements that the above was done, can someone more familiar with the package please help and verify that these tests were done?

I can see that some obviously were, like "start a windows VM", or "acceleration works". But how about "vboxdrv is correctly built", or that guest additions from iso pack inside the vm were installed, or if virtualbox-guest-x11 was installed? This is all not clear to me, sorry...

Hello, vboxdrv is correctly built, because otherwise the VM will refuse to start with a big error on screen like "missing vboxdrv module".
Theoretically both guest-x11 and guest-additions should be tested, that said, the guest-x11 package is more open source w.r.t. Debian policy, and might be preferred for some users.
And yes, all combinations should be tested. (and from what I know have been)
