Bug Description

The new KDE4 menu has a banner/taskbar across the bottom of the menu: "Favorites, Applictions, Computer, Recently Used, Leave"

It is unclear about the context of what is being 'left'. It turns out not to be the K Menu which is being 'exited' Maybe the label should say 'Exit KDE' or 'Logout'

This is one of the KDE 4 UI problems I wrote up back in January and told the KDE UI team about.

Unfortunately, the developers of the new KDE 4 menu have largely ignored criticism, claiming it's just people being used to the old style of menus.

Lars Noodén (larsnooden) wrote : two problems

There are actually two or more problems.

One is the unclear context of the string 'Leave'
'LogOut' or some such more familiar string would be good.

Another thing is the flow of the level of detail. As the eye and mouse move, it should flow from general to specific.

These and other issues can be identified and fixed by time/motion reviews as well as usability review.

The word leave was chosen because leave is more ambiguous than logout, so the other actions could fit in there together. Log out, switch user, sleep, etc can all fit under it semantically.
Even if this can be considered a problem, this is unlikely to be fixed any time soon because there is more than just the label that is a problem with the work flow and developers and usability people haven't been able to think of a better word, and "log out" would be a regression. I am closing this, but feel free to reopen if you have better ideas, and please report any other problems you may find.

Lars Noodén (larsnooden) wrote : semantics and fashion

The actions "Switch user" and "Sleep" most definitely *do not* fit semantically under the descriptor "leave", but the act of "logging out" does.

'quit', 'finish', and 'exit' are more clear or at least in more common use. Probably 99.9% of desktop programs use either 'quit' or 'exit'

@Yuriy: Where and who are the developers and usability people you mention and on what *data* is the claim made that the descriptor 'logout' would be a regression? In or out of fashion, if it is more clear, it is better.

Until there is either a better menu or a better tab label, there is no point in regressing to an old label or diverging from upstream. It doesn't matter what the exact label is, users are still going to know or figure out (single learning experience, not long-term learning curve) what it is supposed to do. There are bigger problems with logging out/switching users/rebooting/whatever with the Kickoff menu than the tab label (confirming an action three times, for instance).

Kubuntu has no problem diverging from upstream when it improves the experience, but not when it isn't going to make a difference. I do have concerns that Leave may not be translated well, but translation usability is an issue in every application. I'm not a fan of having the session options available in Kickoff, nor do I care how the workflow is being handled. But until there is a better alternative...
