Low res 800x600 NVIDIA 7300 LE

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nv

After upgrading 7.10 -> 8.04

Every start up tells me Low-Res only, does not detect monitor (LG Studio works 995E)

after setting mode (eg 1600x1200 test ok, keep res, pressed) is ignored and 800x600 used

Hardware Driver is set to NVIDIA Accelerated graphics in use!

nvidia-settings ->

"You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. "

Following this instruction has no effect.

Everything worked fine (really well) under 7.10

Thank you for this bug report. However, it's not complete yet, can you please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Thanks.
You're indeed not using the nVidia X driver. The one you filed this package against is the default 2D open source driver, created by the community. Didn't you get a notification from restricted manager? Please try to enable the nvidia drivers using System->Manage->Hardware Drivers.

The only thing that's really a bug is the lack of recognition of your monitor, and that's a mistake of xorg, so I'm changing the package to that.

Oops, my fault. I didn't read the Hardware Drivers thing you said. So you're already using nvidia-glx-new. Can you please post /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf? Thanks.

It looks like there is still an old xorg.conf in use, used in a previous version. But the one for xorg 7.3 doesn't need that much information, it can even screw things up.
Please try if everything is solved after you've executed the command 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg'. If you don't know what you should insert, press enter and the default or already existing settings will be kept. Make sure you restart the X server afterwards.

Wow; that did eventually work, the second time, and after about 4
restarts. I had to enable the NVIDIA driver but it did work, thanks for
the help.

Spoke too soon; NVIDIA drivers faild again, would not run any "game"
level graphics and when I manually set the Hardware driver it all
reverted back to 800X600 and asked me to reset the graphics "X" on
sartup, which did not work again. As the PC was working correctly under
7.10 the current system is unusable and I may have to rebuild 7.10
again. This is not making me too happy at the moment.

Thanks, Ralph Richardson.
PS I am a fairly high level user 20y+ experience and have set up a great
number of Ubuntu's over the years for many people but I still can't work
this one out.

Thanks, Its the GLX that don't work. Nothing I have tried will get it to
work

eg running glxgears gives the error -> xlib: extention "GLX" missing on
display ":0.0"

This is true but adding it in any way makes it all crash back to 800x600

Thanks again,

please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old which should show why the nvidia driver fails. Probably it's due to API mismatch between the X driver and the kernel module. Check /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common that it doesn't have any modules in DISABLED_MODULES.

In frustration, I purchased a MSI NVIDIA GeForce NX8600GT. To my horror,
this made no difference.

Driver works as "NV" (hence no 3d)
but not as "NVIDIA"

I have tried everything I and many others on the web can think of.
Nothing works, The new NVIDIA driver is a dud!

Is there some way to revert the system back to 7.10 (which worked fine)?
I cant afford the time or money this 8.04 upgrade has cost me.

Thanks Ralph Richardson.

Your installation is hosed somehow by the upgrade. GF8600GT works just fine here. The log shows that it's using the vesa driver, which means that the driver failed to load either because the nvidia kernel module can't be loaded or because there's a version mismatch between the kernel module and the X driver/libs.

Shut down GDM by running '/etc/init.d/gdm stop', and then from the virtual terminal run 'sudo startx'. That should give you the real error. Make sure to have 'nvidia' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf before you run startx.

you are using the gutsy kernel and that's not supported, because it doesn't have the new nvidia module. Boot 2.6.24 and you should be fine. Closing the bug as invalid.
