usplash pulsates intermittently during boot

This appears to be intentional, as checkfs.sh and checkroot.sh do usplash_write PULSATE (via splash_
The end result, though, is that the progress bar very quickly flickers back and forth between a pulsating mode and normal progress through the boot, every time (regardless of whether a fsck is run).
Perhaps the progress bar could be left alone unless a long-running fsck is started?
