Bug Description

Binary package hint: sysvinit

This appears to be intentional, as checkfs.sh and checkroot.sh do usplash_write PULSATE (via splash_start_indefinite) before running fsck.

The end result, though, is that the progress bar very quickly flickers back and forth between a pulsating mode and normal progress through the boot, every time (regardless of whether a fsck is run).

Perhaps the progress bar could be left alone unless a long-running fsck is started?

low importance for now, but we should do something about this for the release, as I think it will confuse users.

Here's a fix.

I couldn't find any documentation on the standard way to provide patches.
Is it enough to post the patch here ? Otherwise can you tell me what I am supposed to do ?

Thanks.

Yes, posting the patch here is the right thing to do.

This bug was fixed in the package sysvinit - 2.86.ds1-59ubuntu12

---------------
sysvinit (2.86.ds1-59ubuntu12) intrepid; urgency=low

  * debian/initscripts/etc/init.d/check{root,fs}.sh: Disable indeterminate
    progress bar pulsing. Usually it is fast enough, and if there is a real
    fsck going on, we already have textual feedback (which is less confusing
    than the progress bar jumping back and forth). Thanks to "Coucouf" for the
    patch. (LP: #264767)
  * debian/initscripts/lib/init/usplash-fsck-functions.sh: Do not allow
    cancelling fsck if state is "clean with errors".
