Register of Power Status Change Requires Removal & Reinsertion of Battery

Bug Description

The system in use is a Sony Vaio PCG-K415B notebook with Ubuntu 5.04 loaded. When the notebook boots the icon for mains/battery power shows no charge information and the icon indicates that the system is on battery power even though a mains supply is connected.

If the battery pack is then removed and reinserted the display then (correctly) shows the icon for a mains supply and displays the charge state of the battery pack.

If the mains power connection is now removed the icon to the left of the battery indicator still indicates that the laptop is on mains power. The charge indicator does however start to count down showing that the battery is discharging.

The bug occurs 100% of the time and is repeatable. I am sorry if this explanation is not so clear but English is not my first language and I assume that you do not want postings in Hungarian :-)

I'd love to, but the last time I tried downloading an ISO of Dapper I could not get it to boot. If you give me an address where I can get a working copy I will try it out over the weekend on a spare disk.

BTW, I keep my system up to date with patches etc and as of today the problem is still here with Badger 5.10.

edal (edal) wrote : Update on Bug (Dapper Tests)

OK, I downloaded Dapper Flight 6 then applied all the updates so that I was working with the latest software. Here's what happens.

On power up the power status display indicates that there is zero battery charge (single red line) and that the laptop is running on mains power. What does work (this is new) is that the display dims when the mains cord is removed then comes back to full brightness when it is replaced. Throughout this the battery charge and power indicators do not change. Running the mouse pointer over the battery icon gives a popup message telling me that no battery is present and the laptop is running on mains power.

I then removed the battery pack (with mains power applied) and then reinserted it.

After a few seconds the battery charge indicator now shows the charge state. I also get an indication of power source, battery or mains. When I remove the power cord the display dims and I get a message in the top-left corner telling me that the laptop is now on battery power. All indicators and icons then work correctly until the laptop is shut down.

This would seem to indicate an initilization failure in the battery detection when the laptop first starts up, everything else works.

This could be indicative of an ACPI bug in your bios. Check with Sony to see if there is an updated BIOS.

Maybe, but I have been researching this and I have some more data.

If I type acpi -V I get temperature and power status information correctly displayed on the terminal screen, WITHOUT having to remove the battery. I assume the acpi command gets its data from a BIOS call.

If that works, and the gnome-applet doesn't, then I suspect it's a bug
somewhere else. The acpi comment gets its info from the kernel.

Dapper has 2 battery applets, as you may have noticed:
gnome-power-manager and the traditional battstat applet. Are both
failing? If not: which one is failing?

Now this gets complicated and I may need help.

The applet which is failing was added to my top panel under /Add to Panel/System & Hardware/Battery Charge Monitor.

I have just loaded gnome-power-manager but I cannot find out how to add the icon to my panel. Under /System/Preferences/Power Preferences/Advanced I have Display Main Icon ticked but cannot see it. Can someone help me out here?

What's the value of /apps/gnome-power-manager/display_icon_policy

Hi Dennis

Rather than fill the bug list with my troubles please could you tell me where to find this file? I do not have a subdirectory off root called /apps.

Once I find the file I will post a reply to the bug list

Sorry, I meant in gconf (gconf-editor). If you set the value to always,
the icon definitely should be visible.

I suspect that this latest chapter in the problem may be 'pilot error' as I am not a Linux expert. Could somebody please tell me where I am making an incorrect command?

I launched gconf and went to the Gnome Power Monitor.
The box to display an icon on the desktop was not ticked so I ticked it. All other boxes were already ticked in this section.
From a root terminal screen I entered the command 'gnome-power-manager'

And nothing happened. Nothing came back on the terminal screen, it just returned me to the next line, and there is no icon yet for the Gnome Power Manager.

The original problem with the Battery Status Monitor is of course still remaining.

For future reference, if Ubuntu fails to boot on your system, we would like
to hear about it in the form of a new bug report (or a comment on an
existing one if it is already filed). The reason why we publish new ISOs
every day is to get this kind of feedback. :-)

No worries.

I suspect that the problem was due to a bad CD burn, the latest Dapper release boots and loads fine on the same system.

OK, I have an update on this.

The system has now been upgraded to Dapper Beta with daily updates.

The Battery Status Monitor still has the bug as described BUT Gnome Power Management works perfectly. As I change from battery to 220V the GPM icon changes and during charging I can see the charge state.

So I agree, this is a bug in the battstat-applet but for now I have an alternative. If anyone wants something testing then let me know because this is not a critical system and if something dies I can wipe the disk and start again.
