Bug Description

New gparted version (0.2) with important bugfixes released on Jan 30. Please package this version, because it solves important ntfsresizing bugs, which couses problems when user tries to install Ubuntu with new espresso installer (which uses gparted) on system with Windows NTFS partition(s). Also version 0.2 is more safe when resizing NTFS partitions - look at:

http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=389304&group_id=115843

Changes:
version 0.2 (2006-01-30)
 New Features:
 * Detailed progressfeedback. Every step of an operation will be described to the user. Because all this info is stored in a treeview you can choose how many details you like to see.
 * it's now possible to cancel a running operation.
 * run a resize-simulation before performing the actual resize (only for NTFS)

 Translations (new/updated):
 * vi : Clytie Siddall
 * es : Jorge González
 * nl : Tino Meinen
 * gl : Ignacio Casal Quinteiro
 * fi : Ilkka Tuohela
 * en_CA : Adam Weinberger
 * hu : Gabor Kelemen

Bugfixes:
 * finally fixed those annoying resize issues with NTFS filesystems. It appeared i fed MiB's (2^10) into the ntfslib whereas it expected MB's (10^3). In some situations this caused ntfsresize to fail.
   Together with the use of a simulationrun before every resize i believe resizing of NTFS is finally as good as it can be. :-)
 * fixed a few issues with mount() and unmount()
 * fixed get_short_path() which didn't always return the shortest path to a device.
 * and of course some more (minor) bugs ;

3 new gparted versions (0.2, 0.2.1 and 0.2.2) with important bugfixes were released, but Ubuntu Dapper is still on 0.1 :(

Please package latest version, because now Ubuntu gparted package has important ntfs resizing bugs, which couses problems when user tries to install Ubuntu with new espresso installer (which uses gparted) on system with Windows NTFS partition(s). Also version 0.2 is more safe when resizing NTFS partitions, because it run a resize-simulation before performing the actual resize. NTFS resising is really important for Ubuntu, because majority Desktop/Laptop systems has one big NTFS partition as default today.
Problems with NTFS resizing are already reported in GNOME and Ubuntu bug tracking systems, look for example GNOME bug #327685 or Ubuntu bug #24847
Because of this priority (severity) of this bug should be increased, I think.
I'm pasting changelog of latest Gparted versions (0.2.1 and 0.2.2, besides important bugfixes there are also very usefull feature for debugging/bugreporting - implemented export of operationdetails to external file):

Changes:
version 0.2.1 (2006-02-16)
 New Features:
 * added support for commandline arguments (e.g. gparted /dev/hda)
 * added submenu 'Devices' which allows one to select devices from the menu
 * implemented export of operationdetails to external file.
   This can be very usefull for debugging.
 * it's now possible to (re)activate swap from within gparted
 * The mountpoint(s) of mounted partitions are now visible in the treeview.

 Translations (new/updated):
 * bg, tr, fi, en_CA, gl, vi, nl, es

 Changes:
 * removed warning after applying changes to a busy device. I figured
   they were pretty obsolete and tended to confuse users.
 * use ntfsresize instead of ntfsfix to check an ntfs filesystem for errors.
 * improved check for correct version of libparted
 * removed the legend to preserve space.
 * due to cleanups the size of the binary decreased with 10% (yay! :P)

 Bugfixes:
 * we now deal correctly with mountpoints containing spaces
 * fixed a small error with permissions of logical partitions
 * the graphical partition display sometimes 'lost' 1 or 2 pixels. this is fixed.
 * finally fixed a small annoyance with 'cut-off' icons. (#169683)

version 0.2.2 (2006-02-23)
 New Features:
 * little more progressfeedback when creating or resizing a partition
 * more checking is done when resizing using libparted instead of plugins

 Translations (new/updated):
 * vi, es

 Changes:
 * unmount now unmounts all mountpoints a partitions has been mounted on.
 * added shortcut to popupmenu

The problem is that the gparted package contains a patch which integrates it with our new installer espresso. If it were just an update like "download tarball, dch -i and you're set", I'd have done it for each of those versions.

As the functionality of our installier has prio #1, I will have to handpick good fixes and leave out UI changes and general restructuring of the code.

I worked on porting the installer-mode patch to 0.2.2 (next day 0.2.3 came out - grrr!) and the result can be see here: http://daniel.holba.ch/ubuntu/gparted/
However it's not fully working yet (it seems to need a 'reload' of the partitions and everyting which is a no go, especially since we don't have that button in the installer), so if somebody would give me a hand, I'd be very grateful. Porting to 0.2.3 should be fine, just 4 of 33 hunks didn't apply. Please help me out with this.

0.2.3 is up at the same location, same problem. I looked out for the installer_mode test inside an installer_mode test in the Win_GParted constructor but couldn't find it (it doesn't look much different from what the 0.1 installer-mode patch does.

I tried to resize my windows drive (ntfs) with dapper beta gparted and it can not work with the sata drive on my inspiron 6000. What's up? The Inspiron 6000 is listed under dapper as officially supported.

Don: as much as I appreciate your problems, please file this in an extra bug with as much information as you can. Please try not to mix problems in bug reports, it makes following up much harder.

Version 0.2.5 is now out.

2006-05-13 Bart Hakvoort <email address hidden>
bumped to gparted-0.2.5

Version 0.1 is on Ubuntu 6.0.6 flight 7. I just hope there will be a possibility to get away from that first version.

I've merged Debian's gparted 0.2.5-1.1 into Edgy, reapplying our patches from scratch. I don't know if the installer mode will still work (I did my best, but couldn't easily test it), but once I get ubiquity up and running in Edgy I'll be able to fix any problems that arisse.
