Thanks for the logs. Indeed g-v-m has a complete lack for scanner support, and hal doesn't recognize it as scanner, too.

I have a scanner now, and when I plug it in, g-v-m says:

** (gnome-volume-manager:21683): WARNING **: manager.c/1223: cannot get scanner.device property: No property scanner.device on device with id /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_4a9_221c_noserial_if0

Indeed this property does not exist, and it doesn't actually need to know. Checking the 'scanner' capability should be enough.

This bug was fixed in the package gnome-volume-manager - 2.22.1-1ubuntu3
