Bug Description

I do not know what exactly the root cause is, but what I know is, that even if I am the dummest user in the world
this shouldn't hapen.

My Desktop freezes - gnome and kde - think it's the window-manager both dead - took me 3 boots to
write this bug ,,,

i am using pulseaudio as sound server - gnome and compiz - but the network manager didn't start or may start - but if i click on any icon in the panel everything freezes .....

i am using ubuntu since too years - but this never happened before ...

i am saying good night with a bitter: AAARRGGgghhhhhh !

Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. What you have described is a generic X freeze. It could be caused by any number of things, and you need to take some additional steps to provide a complete report.

When did you upgrade to this version of Ubuntu? When did you first notice the freezes occurring?
How frequently do the freezes occur? How many per day would you say you experience?
List the applications you typically have open at the time of the freeze.
Think back to the last few times it froze. What activities were you doing in each of those times?
You have compiz enabled. Does the issue go away if you disable it?
If your system is a laptop, do you suspend/resume it? Had you resumed at some point prior to the freezes?
Finally, and most importantly, please collect a GPU dump after reproducing the bug. Packages to install and directions for doing this are available at: https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-freeze-test
With the GPU dump in hand, we will be able to upstream this bug.

Last Saturday 18th of April

Yesterday evening - I updated with Synaptic -> did a little work -> reboot -> boing

> How frequently do the freezes occur?
VERY frequently instantly after booting and session login

> How many per day would you say you experience?
Yesterday only - 5 Times

Nearly none - it took me 20 Minutes of rebooting to get firefox to work
(But pulse audio works as sound server - this would be my hint)

(automatic) logged in

yessir

> Does the issue go away if you disable it?

Don't know - will check

> If your system is a laptop, ....
No Laptop

GPU comes tomorrow

Thanks.

Lets verify it's not compiz-related then. The files /var/log/Xorg.0.log,
~/.xsession-errors and output of the command "lspci -vvnn" will also help.

This might be bug 359392, which has been worked around in the latest
updates. If it's crashing too much for you to use Update Manager, boot in
Recovery Mode to install updates and see if that corrects the problem.

building nvidia 180.44 module failed

nevertheless
install the package intel-gpu-tools
(YES after apt-get update)

reboot -> screen stays black

message comes up -> "something wrong with your graphic card"
-> continue in bla bla bla

continue -> screen still black

reboot with normal kernel ...

half of my gnome panel missing and the zero config damon saying something about and error ....
switched to the console doing a "sudo /etc/init.d/Networkmanager start" and a "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart"

Hello,

Could you at least attach the output of lspci ? (to know more about your
video hardware)
Open a terminal and type "lspci -vvnn > lspci.txt" (V V N N not WNN). Attach
the file lspci.txt (in your home directory) here.

Thanks.

Ok, assinging to package xserver-xorg.

This issue is not related to the one referred to by Matt as the graphics card is a Radeon and not intel (ATI Technologies Inc M58 [Radeon Mobility X1800] [1002:7102])
Claus, could you please run "apport-collect 364866" to provide more information ?

affects: ubuntu → xorg (Ubuntu)

I investigated the error:

I don't think it's an XServer error!
The panels up and down a frozen - but the Icons on the desktop are still working ...
Some windows (like the avahi notifiy) are frozen .
The error occurred on gnome AND kde.
The time I am starting the Networkmanager is NOT started.
I must start it by entering "sudo /etc/init.d/Networkmanager start" on the command linefollowed by a
"sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart"
then everything works nearly good
pulse audio is also stopping sometime ....
hope i could helped you!
