Bug Description

After an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) to Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) thunderbird (2.0.0.21 (20090409)) crashes, reporting a "Segmentation fault". After deinstalling the lightning-extension it runs properly.

Sunbird (0.9+nobinonly-0ubuntu2) crashes as well, reporting the same error "Segmentation fault". Until now, I could not find a workaround.

What happens if you use a new Thunderbird profile and add lightning to it as needed, Just set up one email at this time. I'm not sure if this is lightning causing this just removing it does not mean it is lightning. The changes made to 0.9 from 0.8 are not really all that much. I upgraded fine with lightning and sunbird installed.
However this means i have to write up a debug instructions for thunderbird lightning sunbird and a few others. Can you try the above and when i get time in the next month or so i will write it up. Ths main this we need is the debug packages needed for the above packages. for now try the above and let us know what happens

The reported problem disappeared on my PC, without me having any idea of the reason. When making the same upgrade on a different PC (with almost the same programmes, extensions, etc.), the problem did not show up. Thus I'm unable to recall it and make any tests.

I'm still experiencing this problem. I'd really rather not have to create a new profile, it becomes a big problem to have to manage my mail across two different profiles. Is there anything else I can do provide more information for troubleshooting this?

Thunderbird suddenly segfaults after a while.

When that happens, I can't start it again (constant segmentation faults) unless I wait about an hour or so.

I can start thunderbird in safe mode.

I also use the google calendar lightning plugin.

I've already tried re-installing thunderbird with no effect.

Sorry about the status change, since previous status was new I thought it would be best to reset it.

I'm using 'Provider for Google Calendar 0.5.1'
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/sunbird/addon/4631

Will try new profile and let you know if it resolves the problem.

The problem persists after creating a new profile.
As stated above, I get following error when running in debug mode:

0xb72e2078 in strcmp () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6

I'm running Kubuntu 9.04.

I think it's linked to the google calendar plugin.
My thunderbird keeps crashing every time after entering the user and password for the google calendar (disabled the 'remember password' in testprofile).
When I skip google calendar login (Cancel on login screen), thunderbird works fine.

I'll try disabling password for the Provider plugin as well, but that's surprising that that helps for you, because when I uninstalled Provider and left Lightning installed, I still had this problem.

I have a desktop and a laptop, both 64-bit, using thunderbird. I have what seems like the same problem (get segfault) but only on the desktop machine. I have copied the profile from the laptop to the desktop with no apparent help.

Ie. with an identical profile, the desktop crashes, and the laptop doesn't.

"When that happens, I can't start it again (constant segmentation faults) unless I wait about an hour or so."
This is essentially what I experience.

I am running thunderbird, lightning and googleCal provider from the repos.

"File a bug using apport..."
I have enabled apport, and have succeeded in getting TB to crash, but only with googlecal provider enabled. However, I don't get any opportunity to submit a bug report.
(I enabled it by typing "sudo force_start=1 /etc/init.d/apport restart")

Any suggestions appreciated..

In fact, I have got TB to crash without googlecal provider installed (removed via synaptic) - however, prior to crashing it brings up error messages (presumably because I removed it in synaptic, without disabling it in thunderbird).

But apport doesn't detect the crash, or give an opportunity to report it...

I've been using Thunderbird with Lightning but NOT the Google Provider extension for the past couple of weeks and had no crashes at all. I then installed Provider yesterday and have started experiencing the crashes again, so it does seem to be Provider that's the problem. I just filed a bug report using apport, it can be seen here:

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help.

ok here is the deal.
1. not every ones bug is the same as this one.
2. i need everyone to run the following command and post output to this bug report.
apt-cache policy libstdc++6 libstdc++5 lightning-extension sunbird thunderbird

Ignore the below until after you run that command and post output

Bart: your bug is not valid since you are not using our packaged extension
Gus: You bug is not the same as this one.
Petrusp: Your bug does not pertain to this bug at all

I re-opened this bug for now.
Just because "it crashed" does not mean its the same crash just means you are seeing a crash.

I don't have Google Calendar installed. Yet, somehow the reported crash reappeared - but until now I failed to realize any strict reason. There seems to be an interplay with jedit (or Java). When jedit is opened, sometimes (not always!) Sunbird crashes, when I start it. If right after the crash I close jedit, Sunbird starts and runs properly. The same is true for Thunderbird.

ok guys thanks for the info. I'm closing this bug since the reporter is not using our package.

Clax: your problem is caused by not having libstdc++5 since the upstream version needs it (most likely the cauase)
Please report this upstream but first try installing libstdc++5, if it happens again report it upstream.
