Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

music.xml recommends gpixpod for ipod owners, however gpixpod isn't maintained and doesn't support anything above an ipod 5g or a nano2g, both superseded in sept 07.

It may be a good idea to warn users about this, or not to recommend the program at all, then again it may not be.

Ubuntu has built-in support for ipods in Rhythmbox as far as I know, so I think we should recommend that. See also bug 217860

Most of the article is about rhythmbox. banshee, gpixpod and gtkpod are
mentioned for ipods as well. gpixpod is just for putting images on your
ipod, though it only works for the oldest photo-capable ipods.

Here's the change I propose making to resolve this bug. Final text will include links to the documentation for noted applications and the Ubuntu wiki iPod page.

---------------------

ORIGINAL

1.4.1. iPod
If you have a portable music player which can also display photos and videos,
you may prefer to use Banshee, which is a music player with good support for
such devices. iPod owners may also like to try specialized applications such as
GPixPod and gtkpod for handling multimedia.

---------------------

REVISED

REVISED

1.4.1. iPod
Ubuntu's default music management application Rhythmbox, supports first to fifth
generation iPods, including the iPod mini, iPod Photo, iPod Shuffle, iPod nano,
and iPod Video. It can transfer music to these iPods and create playlists.

The applications Banshee, Amarok and gtkpod can also handle music transfer to
and from these iPod devices. These applications also include added support for
transferring photos and videos encoded in iPod-compatible formats to and from
first to fifth generation iPods

Neither the iPod Touch nor the iPhone are officially supported by any Linux
applications at this time.

For more information on using iPods with Ubuntu, see the iPod page on the Ubuntu
wiki.

Michael, thanks for your patch. It looks great, so I have applied it to the Lucid dev branch. Out of curiosity, I think Rhythmbox supports 6g ipods now - is this something you can confirm? If so, I will update the documentation again to account for this. Cheers.
