Bug Description

Using Dapper Flight 5
Kernel: 2.6.15-19-386

I installed dapper on my laptop, and although the trackpoint mouse is recognized, an external ps/2 microsoft mouse does not work. I am a linux newbie.

dmesg | grep mouse gives me the following message:

"mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice"

I originally installed Breezy Badger, however, had trouble with it recognizing the integrated ethernet card, a bug related to ACPI module. So I tried Dapper.

Thanks for you bug report. Are you able to update to the latest kernel (-20) as well as other xorg updates then observe if the issue still persists?

Thanks for the response. The latest kernel available in my repository is linux-image-2.6.15-19-386. Xorg is also up-to-date as per the repo. I have. Again, I am a newbie so let me know where to get the kernel linux-image-2.6.15-20-386.

Also, I have switched to a USB mouse which works perfectly.

can you do

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The daily currently now has -21 kernel. You could reinstall Dapper beta (at -20) then upgrade.

Hello,
I'm running dapper (kernel 2.6.15-21) and my external PS/2 mouse do not work as well on my IBM ThinkPad 600X.

It looks like the kernel is not initializing the ps2 port because if mouse support was broken, none of them would work.

This bug is related to #28914 (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xorg-driver-synaptics/+bug/28914) I think. It seems that it is problem with udev.

after the upgrade from breezy to dapper (kernel 2.6.15.23), my external ps/2 mouse also stopped working on my IBM Thinkpad T21.
The external keyboard is working properly.

PS2 mouse 2 buttons with ball ( not optical) doesnt work on laptop IBM A20M. Tracking pointer in center of keyboard works fine. Items were working fine simultaniously on Breezy 5.10. Did fresh install (not upgrade) to Dapper 6.06, no more PS2 mouse. running kernel 2.6.15.26.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

Hi Brian,Thank you for your response to my bug report. Unfortunately my IBM X21 has since died and I am unable to confirm if the bug still exists. I do recall though that upon switching to SUSE distro, the PS/2 bug disappeared. Hi Brian! I think I am facing the same problem with PS/2 mouse and IBM Thinkpad described above. I have an old Thinkpad 380Z and installed Ubuntu 6.06.1 onto it. And I got PS/2 mouse not working, though it works fine with Microsoft Windows. I upgraded the Kernel to 2.6.15-29, however it did not help with the mouse. Is there anything I can do to help investigating and fixing this problem?

Could you please include as attachments the following additional information:
1. Please include the output of the command 'uname -a' in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command 'dmesg > dmesg.log' and attach the resulting file 'dmesg.log' to this bug report.
3. Please run the command 'sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log' and attach the resulting file 'lspci-vvnn.log' to this bug report.
For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks in advance!
