Bug Description

After the latest update of the Ubuntu One client software, the Ubuntu One icon in the Notification Area disappears shortly after logging in to the Gnome GUI. Disconnecting and reconnecting to Ubuntu One, via Nautilus, will bring back the Notification Area icon briefly.

Confirmed also, Ubuntu 9.04 on Dell Latitude 2100. UbuntuOne notification icon disappears shortly after login.

Hi! This is by design, the icon is now only shown during periods of activity (scanning or downloading) or if there is an error. We realize it may be surprising at first (as is any change in behavior). In the next couple of weeks, we'll be adding integration with the notification system so you'll have a better indication that Ubuntu One is happy, all files have synced.

Hi, in this case it also should show up, if uploading a file - but it does not ATM.
And I would love an option to have it always visible, since I'm used to open U1 folder via the icon.

I would like to have the choice:
1. icon always visible with status of sync (for people who want to monitor their U1)
like #5 I was used to open my U1 folder via the icon.
2. only visible on activity (for people who might get confused by the icon)

Hello, I also think the same as Matthias Sommer (#5)
I would also like the option is always visible, but also open the folder through the UbuntuOne icon.

Hi,
I noticed it after last updates of ubuntu-client 0.92.0. At this moment I had instaled 2.6.28.14 kernel.
Now I have 2.6.28.15 kernel and the problem persists.

Si, this is not related to the kernel at all.
This is the intended behavior, although not th final one.
We're currently working on showing the icon *only* when there's activity, and maybe a config option for those who want it on all the time, but that's not going to be the default.
It is not a bug.

A config option in the client for it to show up all the time would be appreciated.

Ok, I get that the icon is now supposed to disappear, but why isn't it syncing?

Hmmm. Scratch that last comment. It is syncing but I have no icon, no indication of activity other than my network monitor applet. The files don't show up on my Ubuntu One web page, but I see them in being uploaded when I click "My Files" in the tree on the left.

Yes, that is being worked on as I write this. Rodney is sitting right next to me, making the applet show up when syncing, as well as popping up nice notifications.

Darkn00b: One way to get notification of what's going on while we are making the changes so it's more obvious is with u1sdtool, like so:

$ u1sdtool --current-transfers

You can perform a "man u1sdtool" to find out about other options, and like Martin mentioned, Rodney is kicking it hard on making the client much, much, much more awesome.

Just one more idea regarding the behaviour of the icon.
Imagine you are using a mobile device (notebook, netbook) and you want to disconnect from wireless. How can you tell if all transfers to/from UbuntuOne are completed?
Other scenario: You drop a large amount of files into your UbuntuOne folder shortly before you shut down your machine. Is it save to shut down or are still some transfers going on?
Or some one else drops some files in a shared folder and you go offline before UbuntuOne has downloaded all the files.

In my opinion the icon should always be there, telling you that you are in sync with UbuntuOne. This gives a better feeling than "I don't see anything, so it could be OK... or not?".

It doesn't reappear when I put others files in the folder (approx. 2-300 mo) so I think if you say right the icon normaly appear to say he have a transfert
