Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-live

I booted a live cd on a Compaq Presario 6000 with a Sony SDM-HS73 monitor. It loads up, but only at 640x480 resolution. I went under System -> Screen Resolution, but 640x480 was the only choice it gave me. Under Windows XP the monitor is listed simply as "Plug and Play". The display adapter is NVIDIA GeForce2 Integrated GPU (Compaq).

I apologize if this is not enough information, but I know very little about Linux. I didn't fully understand the instructions about reporting bugs due to my lack of familiarity with Linux. I rebooted several times and had the same problem everytime. I did not see that this has been reported previously.

My understanding is that Flight 7 is the most recent
version. Please let me know if this is not true. I
will try again when Flight 8 (or whatever is the name
of the new test release) comes out.

Thanks. I didn't know about that address. I actually downloaded the release candidate that came out today. It still comes up in 640x480 and I don't have any alternative resolutions.

The exact same thing happened to me on my Fujitsu-Siemens Celsius H230 with an ATI FireGL 5000 adapter.

The problem was that MergedFB is enabled by default - and that it couldn't detect a secondary monitor. Because of this, it set the sync and refresh values to the default failsafe ones on the whole (merged) framebuffer. I managed to solve the problem by adding

Option "MergedFB" "false"

to the Device section of xorg.conf. I hope this might help someone.

I'm reassigning this bug for package 'xserver-xorg-video-nv'.

bigg, thanks for the bug report, and for the feedback. But unfortunately, we don't have enough information to further debug this issue. If possible, please follow the relevant steps of https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingXAutoconfiguration, and attach the files mentioned there into this bug report.

Thank you in advance!
