Bug Description

Still on the G4 Cube with a 22" Cinema Display and Dapper Flight 7 Live.
The screen is vertically split by a width vertical band and part of the display is missing. (The problem appears also with Suse 10.1.) Then the installer fails with difficult to read messages (they are truncated and shifted by a 1 line).

When using video=aty128fb:vmode:22 instead of the recommended and previously working video=ofonly, the vertical band problem disapear, but now the error messages are easier to read:

FATAL: Module fbcon not found.
FATAL: Module vga16fb not found.

PS: I was unable to attach this to the previous report.

Thank you for your bug report. Can you confirm whether this still happens with the latest, stable Ubuntu 6.10 release?

Well, I dunno. When I had the chance to reinstall the cube again, Debian Etch was out and didn't exhibit that problem. The fact that one has to use the append "video=aty128fb:vmode:22" instead of "video=ofonly" is still true though.

The allegedly "FATAL" errors are actually ignored, so this shouldn't be what's causing it to fail. It would be useful to know what the hard-to-read errors on the failing install actually are; is there any possibility of deciphering them?

This can't be a debian-installer bug, since d-i isn't used on the live CD. I'm guessing usplash for lack of better information, but it could be a number of things.

Debian Etch doesn't ship a live CD so isn't much of a basis for comparison here. It would still be useful for you to test Ubuntu 7.04 (just a quick test-boot of the live CD) if at all possible.

I can't test it because I don't have any PPC arch machine, so Nicolas can try to do it.

I had the opportunity to try the live 6.10 - and because PPC was dropped, I didn't try 7.04. The "live" option gives a black screen, the "live video=ofonly" gives the split screen and now with a color problem. And the previously working display option ("live video=aty128fb:vmode:22) gives a black screen till after the end of the boot. Still on G4 Cube with a Cinema 22 Display. As a note, even when the install ran successfully, the X server is never configured correctly because the 22" Cinema Display use an unconventional resolution of 1600x1024.

I always have to add a Modeline stance to the X conf:

Modeline "1600x1024" 108.00 1600 1616 1656 1704 1024 1027 1030 1056 -hsync -vsync -csync

Is this bug still a problem with Feisty or Dapper?

I gave it a try...

live -> boot -> OF screen -> black screen
live video=ofonly -> boot -> OF screen -> message (loading) -> caret
live video=aty128fb:vmode:22 -> OF screen -> message -> black screen

Anything else that you want? I still can do a few test, but the system
will soon be decommissioned.
