Bug Description

Binary package hint: humanity-icon-theme

Currently in Lucid the icons for Word Powerpoint Excel and Access have their W, P, X and A styled EXACTLY like that of OS X. It's understandable that there should be some similarity for converts. However, the similarity is only there for Mac converts. The similarity for Word for example should be "Blue W" as that is present in the versions of Word for Windows as well as Mac.
The new Ubuntu font should be used for the icons. It helps with Ubuntu's identity and will be a step away from the OS X cloning it is being accused of as of late.

There is a discussion in the mailing list http://old.nabble.com/.doc%2C-.xls%2C-etc-icons-in-Humanity-Update-tt27613841.html

I've also made icons based on the not yet finished new Ubuntu font.

Ditto. I know this is the testing phase, but didn't the UI Freeze already happen? And wasn't this change brought about right when the UI Freeze happened? How unprofessional. Having the icons stylized uniquely using the new Ubuntu font would make perfect sense.

The most beautiful what? Blatant copies of OS X?
As an example, look up the icon for an Word for Mac, and the same for Windows and maybe you'll see the point of this bug

summary: - Update doc xls ppt adp icons
+ .doc .xls .ppt .adp icons use Microsoft Office Mac logos

This is the official logo of Microsoft so I do not see that bothering you

The format has owned Microsoft's logic seems to me to use their icons

Launchers (icons) should be coherent within the OS. I think it would be much better if Ubuntu would use it's new font to create new icons, which would also better connect to the default icon theme.

Update:

    * Made the letters so they're all the same size (a problem I didn't notice until my last post)
    * Put highlight around the letters
    * Made the edges round

Again this is only a mockup, as ideally the W, A, X, and P would just be the font being designed by Dalton Maag

It's the official logo for a Mac but I don't think it's the be all official logo for Word. I haven't used the latest office on windows but I think they sport a less rounded "W" from what I can see on their website. Is it the case that the OSX logos are designed by apple? If that's true then I think it would be an argument for Ubu to also develop their own logo. I like meborc's suggestion of using the new font.

What is the problem with the current karmic icons? They are pretty, different and much
more informative than those alternatives. Maybe we need just a colour rebrand for those?

@Leandro

Then screenshot you provide shows the icons for the applications, the bug referrers to the icon for the files.

Attached is the Karmic equivalent icon that is changing

Uhm.. sorry. Anyway I would go for something on that line, like these ones. I think the MSOffice icons (Mac or Windows ones) are there mostly to promote the MSOffice brand, not to be particuarly informative.

Of course this attachment is just to give an idea of what I think, it is not a real suggestion, as I'm not
an Icon designer.

@Merk,

I thought the icons that are being addressed here are those I have attached - the one you attached is the .odt icon. I am using karmic, but I assume nothing has changed in Lucid.

I want to add that, appart from thinking that the W,P,A,X letters are only to promote the
brand of MSOffice, so we shouldn't copy that, these letters make no sense in other
languages than english. Also I must say that I actually don't know what the "A" stands
for, so proving that these icons are only informative for someone that is already used
to the icons in other OSs.

I strongly encourage the development of pictorial icons, that quickly reference to the
content of the file.

@ zpletan

You are correct. I was showing Leandro the Karmic equivalent. I see now I only attached the Karmic .doc icon and not the xls, ppt or adp icons.

Attached are the icons for .doc .xls .adp and .ppt respectively.
Top is what they currently are in Karmic (could not find .adp file icon)
Middle is what they currently are in Lucid
Bottom is what they are in Mac OS X (Access is not available for Mac OS X)

@Leandro

Sure pictures work too, maybe just have the existing odf, odp etc icons but colored blue/green/orange/purple for the Office equivalents

Perhaps add a faux MS Office emblem to the icon. Rather like what has been proposed here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/301035/comments/29 (see attachment, specifically windows partition icon)

I see what I did wrong - and no, you were right. I forgot I was using latest humanity icon set from elementary ppa. The icon you attached is indeed the .doc icon on (vanilla) Karmic.

I like the icons that you've attached here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/humanity-icon-theme/+bug/537358/comments/8

They seem to have a unique feel and I think that maintaining this feel across these files that people will be using Open Office to open will improve compatibility..even if its just from a usability stand point. A lot of people that I interact with aren't fully aware that Open Office can handle regular doc files, so using similar icons would possibly help clear up the confusion. +1

The patch has been applied, attached is how they look now.

I really don't mind they don't look like what I made. This bug was to make them look unlike the Mac Office icons and in that regard the bug is squashed. My suggestion was merely showing an option, using the Ubuntu font. Ultimately this direction wasn't chosen, but I suppose that's because the font isn't finalized yet. I never suggested my exact mockups be used as I'm no graphic designer and I'm sure a lot of people felt they looked something awful.
