Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-default-settings

Currently the Kubuntu plymouth theme uses 4 dots that get filled as if it was indicating a left-to-right progress, indeed once all 4 dots are filled, they get "emptied" and filled all over again.

This is very bad behavior since it makes the user wonder why it is emptying again. Instead the circle indicator as seen in Plasma, when a widget is busy, should be used. To indicate that there is progress, but not exactly how far along through booting it is.

How about animating the icon on the far right.. have each of the 3 gear segments hightlight/pulse as it progresses?

Not sure if that is going to work all that well on the super small color space as seen on nvidia drivers.

This is also true of the Ubuntu default theme; thus, I am marking this as affecting "plymouth" (the source package for plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo).

When we had usplash, booting was indicated by a progress bar filling from left to right, and shutting down was indicated by emptying from left to right; indeterminate state was indicated by "bouncing".

What we have now, on both startup and shutdown, looks like a progress bar going from 0% to 100% and back again.

In the following forum post, I've illustrated a change we could make to the dot pattern --essentially, the progress bar should bounce or scroll, not fill and empty:

The ubuntu-logo theme works as designed. Please discuss proposals for improvement with the design team (ayatana).

In any event, I expect the current behavior to be final for lucid.

Note that ubuntu studio uses a circular progress pattern. Steal their code? =)

code is not really the problem, more like visual integration with the overall oxygen theme experience. though i have it on my todo for raring, currently waiting on upstream to provide some background artwork.
