Bug Description

During the Lucid cycle ekiga was demoted from main to universe. In doing so, translations were lost, as they were stripped from the package, but they were not shipped in language packs.

The impact to users is obvious: although there are upstream translations, ekiga remains in English, making it only usable by English speakers.

The ekiga package in Lucid (3.2.6-1ubuntu1) simply needs to be rebuilt so that translations are not stripped.

This problem is no longer an issue in the development branch (3.2.7-2ubuntu1), where the package has been rebuilt being part of universe and upstream translations are shipped normally as part of the package.

TEST CASE:

1. In Ubuntu 10.04 with a non-English locale, go to Applications > Software Center
2. Type 'ekiga' in the search box
3. Choose the ekiga package and install it
4. After installation, go to Applications > Internet > Ekiga Software Phone
5. Notice the ekiga UI being in English

No regressions are foreseen, as the fix simply involves rebuilding the package.

There are no "ekiga.mo" file in "/usr/share/locale-langpack/xx_XX/LC_MESSAGES". If you compile *.po file to ekiga.mo file and then copy it to your system then Ekiga will be localized.

same with German locale: ekiga 3.2.6 on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx is untranslated, ekiga.mo is missing from /usr/share/locale-langpack/de/LC_MESSAGES/. Upstream blames Ubuntu packagers, upstream bug is RESOLVED NOTGNOME. At least the following locales have issues:

French
Japanese
German

And this is *not* a bug of ekiga package, it is a bug of the language-pack-gnome-xx-base package.

Ekiga is in universe since Lucid release, and it should ship translations with it rather than waiting for language packs to provide the files.

So this is a bug in ekiga package.

Ok, if I get you right: Canonical has decided to drop support for Ekiga package for whatever reason, so package was moved from main to universe, and translations ship no longer with the translations packages but must be included in application package. I see that the new package for Maverick ships with translations, so Ekiga package maintainers simply forgot to include translations in Lucid package, and should provide an update package with translations for Lucid. So, shouldn't you set importance (Medium) and status (Triaged) in ekiga (Ubuntu)? I would have done it myself if I were allowed to.

I suppose this is fixed with ekiga 4.0.0, if not please reopen.
