Bug Description

Second stage of wubi installation failed and I'm dropped to busybox with an error:
"(initramfs) Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened"

Host system is WinXP
Latest maverick image from 2010-09-17

10.04.1 installs fine on the same test system.

This is happening because the new version of ntfs-3g checks whether the device is already mounted by looking in /etc/mtab, which doesn't exist, so it gets confused. We could adjust ntfs-3g, but to be honest I think the safest and simplest fix is to make /etc/mtab a symlink to /proc/mounts in our initramfs.

Same problem to me (First by updating a Wubi installation from 10.04 to 10.10 beta, second try was a complete reinstallation via Wubi)

This bug was fixed in the package initramfs-tools - 0.98.1ubuntu4

---------------
initramfs-tools (0.98.1ubuntu4) maverick; urgency=low

  * Make /etc/mtab a symlink to /proc/mounts on startup, since e.g. current
    ntfs-3g doesn't work otherwise (LP: #641306). (We can't make it a
symlink directly in the initramfs, since mkinitramfs uses 'cpio
    --dereference'.)

I used the Maverick daily build from today (9/23/2010) and I still get this error. Host system in Win7, and as I said, was trying the Wubi installer from today's maverick build.

What exact URL did you use to download the build?

I used the link here:

Any chance it just didn't make it into the build?

I've tried the following image from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/daily-live/current/ this morning:
c5cd04e5b62d615c595c1bd99bad5ac6 maverick-netbook-i386.iso 24-Sep-2010 04:12 691M

And it installs perfectly fine while I had this issue one week ago.

Yes, the current build should have my fix. Could you add the "debug="
parameter (without the quotes) to the kernel command line, and show us
the output from a few lines before the "Mount is denied" error?
