Bug Description

Dear Ubuntu-Developers,

trying to install Ubuntu 6.06 as a linux beginner with the default options on an empty desktop computer with NO existing os like MS Windows, I failed several times. Here comes the bug report:

We're sorry; the installer crashed. Please file a bug report at https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+filebug and a developer will attend to the problem as soon as possible. To help the developers understand what went wrong, include the following detail in your bug report, and attach the files /var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/partman:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/ubiquity", line 130, in ?
    install(sys.argv[1])
  File "/usr/bin/ubiquity", line 55, in install
    ret = wizard.run()
  File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ubiquity/frontend/gtkui.py", line 264, in run
    self.progress_loop()
  File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ubiquity/frontend/gtkui.py", line 538, in progress_loop
    raise RuntimeError, ("Install failed with exit code %s; see "
RuntimeError: Install failed with exit code -11; see /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/syslog

Thank you for any help if available.

Yours sincerely

There's a kernel oops in there; this is not an installer bug. Chances are that this is due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, or to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers). I'll reassign the bug to the kernel just in case, but it should probably be rejected.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Dear Carlos Diener,

thank you for your email concerning the bug 73350. And sorry that I
haven't kept on reporting.

The installation problem that I reported in November 2006 obviously was
a hardware problem and not caused by Ubuntu 6.06 itself.

By now, I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 in my daily private working environment
very stable (and on the same computer as then).

So, you can mark the reported bug as non-relevant. Again, thank you very
much.

Yours sincerely
