Bug Description

When clicking System, Administration, Networking; I am not prompted for an administrative password. The network settings window appears, and a "wired connection" and a "modem connection" are listed. There is a "properties" button, but there are no "activate" or "deactivate" buttons. I am able to configure both the modem and the ethernet by clicking on "properties", but I cannot use them because there is no way to activate the connection.

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS was previously installed on this particular machine and Networking worked just fine. I erased the hard drive before installing Ubuntu version 6.10 for a clean installation.

There is a tick box to the left of the device this activates/deactivates the device hope that helps.

It does not matter whether the tick box is checked or
unchecked.

I have used 6.06 LTS extensively, and I know how
networking is supposed to work. I am not an Ubuntu
newbie.

Thanks for your help.

admin should ask for password for network changes Missed that point. But the switching on and off of the network works fine.

Here are some additional observations about the problem:

The screen capture in the Network Settings, Help, Getting Started screen also does not have "activate" and "deactivate" buttons shown. Apparently this must be an intentional change from 6.06 Dapper Drake... BUT, the screen capture is still different than the actual Network Settings box displayed on my computer. First, it shows 2 icons next to the Location box: a "+" and a "-". mine shows 3 icons: a disk, a paper shredder, and a grayed out check mark. Secondly, the check boxes are different: it shows either a check mark, or a "-", mine shows either a check mark or an empty box.

What is really bizarre is that in my experimenting: checking and unchecking, higlighting and unhighlighting in the Network settings box, suddenly a small "activating network interface" box will pop up. After a little while it will dissappear, but nothing will be activated - nor will I get an error message. I cannot duplicate this consistently, so I don't know why or exactly how I get this little dialog box to pop up.
