Bug Description

Binary package hint: kmid

Ubuntu 6.10 german version.
Double-clicking on a mid-file showed after a couple of seconds a window (similar to add/remove programs), proposing to install
* Amarok
* KMid

I installed both. Next KMid showed up with an error-msg
"Could not open /dev/sequencer to get some info.
Probably there is another program using it."

After some investigation I found, that there is no such directory "/dev/sequencer" at all - no wonder that KMid cannot open it.

Same message is displayed when trying to go to Settings > MIDI Setup.

I am having the same issue- using English version.
I have the same programs installed and of course the same message as you Gerhard-
there is no such directory "/dev/sequencer".

I have found that to be the case with other files, however if it is "probably already in use",
I believe it must exist

Katie

(last time I heard Gruß I was in Bayern- in the context of Gruß Gott)

Hi Katie,

nice that someone reacts on my error-report - at least confirming that not 'only you' has the problem.

In the meantime I think this might also be an installer-problem (maybe synaptic), not specifically a KMid error.

I reported the problem 2006-12-10. In the meantime I downloaded a lot of patches / updates. Maybe uninstall and reinstall of KMid would solve the problem in the case the installer was improved in the meantime.

Gruß, Gerhard
BTW: I am from Austria (not from Bavaria / Bayern). The proper term is "Grüß Gott" (with 'umlaut u') and rather an official form of greeting in Bayern / Germany and Austria.

Are you still seeing this problem? What version of kmid?

I installed in the meantime Ubutuntu 7.04. Trying to install KMid tells me, that this is for the KDE-Desktop. I didn't install it, since when I double-clicked a mid-file on the new Ubuntu 7.04 installation, the system proposed to install Amarok - giving errors afterwards. See related bugs:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/amarok/+bug/120006
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/amarok/+bug/120008

As I found, also Amarok is made for the KDE-desktop and not for gnome. So I think the problem comes from installing a package designed for KDE (kubuntu), but offered in synaptic for Ubuntu with insufficient installation procedures for the gnome desktop.

I cannot answer the question, if it is an error that KMID (and Amarok) is listed in synaptic for Ubuntu though they are designed of Kubuntu (KDE-desktop) OR if they should be offered for ubuntu as well, but the installation-procedures are not adopted accordingly.
